Big Bad Wool baby yeti is the fun furry stuff, and it’s knitted to a length to fold up creating a double layer of warmth for your ears. If the Sherpa brim isn’t your thing, this pattern has a version written with a traditional hemmed brim. Both versions have the same color work chart that’s bold and geometric.

Big Bad Wool weepaca or other light worsted/ DK weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors approximately 60 yards of background color and 45 yards of foreground color;

Andalusia Knit Hat by Amy Opie

What Is Being Made

Andalusia is a color work knit hat designed by Amy Opie, featuring bold geometric patterning inspired by the town of Andalusia in South Alabama. The hat combines decorative stranded color work with a distinctive faux fur or Sherpa brim that folds to create double-layer warmth around the ears. The pattern offers two construction options: a version with the cozy faux fur brim or an alternative with a traditional hemmed brim, allowing knitters to choose their preferred finish while maintaining the same striking color work design throughout.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs stranded color work, a technique where multiple yarn colors are carried across the fabric to create the geometric pattern. The pattern specifically addresses float management—the loose strands of yarn carried behind the color work. The designer emphasizes keeping floats loose enough to prevent fabric distortion and notes that trapped floats (where floats are caught or anchored to the back of the work) can be visible from the front. Knitters are encouraged to monitor their floats as they work and decide their preferred approach to float handling based on their own experience and preferences.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes stranded color work knitting with a color work chart featuring bold, geometric designs. The hat construction includes options for either a folded Sherpa brim or a traditional hemmed brim, with both versions incorporating the same color work charting throughout the main body of the hat.

Materials

  • Yarn: DK or worsted weight yarn is suitable for this project. The pattern specifically features Big Bad Wool Baby Yeti for the faux fur or Sherpa brim component, providing the distinctive furry texture.
  • Needles: Appropriate needles for DK or worsted weight yarn, as specified by the pattern gauge.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this hat is suitable for knitters with experience in basic techniques who are ready to tackle stranded color work and manage multiple yarn colors within a single project.
