Product Description
Introducing my Avocado knitting pattern. The avocado is also known as an alligator pear. Botanically it is a large berry with a single seed, but is usually treated as a vegetable because of its savoury flavour. My avocado has two halves; one half has a hollow and the other a stone so you can fit them together. Knitted veggies are super toys to encourage little ones to eat veg and greens, or you can use them as decorative items in your home. My veggies are worked flat, but most pieces could easily be converted to knitting in the round if that is your preference. You will also need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew seams.
Avocado Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
This is a downloadable knitting pattern for a small stuffed toy avocado designed by Amanda Berry. The finished toy measures 8.5cm tall by 6cm wide, making it an ideal size for a decorative keepsake or gift. The pattern creates a three-dimensional fruit with distinct avocado characteristics, including a textured body and facial features.
Craft and Technique Overview
The Avocado is an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with foundational knitting experience. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with toy-making construction methods. Pieces are knitted flat on straight needles and then assembled through seaming, a traditional approach that allows for precise shaping and dimensional structure in small toy projects.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes essential knitting stitches appropriate for toy construction:
- Knit (k) - the primary stitch forming the fabric base
- Knit into front and back (kfb) - an increase technique used to shape the avocado's rounded form and create dimensional shaping where needed
These fundamental stitches are combined to build the toy's structure with careful attention to shaping and proportion.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn (double knitting or light worsted weight minimum), with less than 25g total yarn required across all colors. Recommended yarn includes Sirdar or Hayfield Bonus DK, which is 100% acrylic. Three specific yarn shades create the avocado design:
- Dark Green - shade "Orchard" for the outer avocado flesh
- Light Green - shade "Lime" for contrast detailing
- Brown - shade "Chocolate" for the pit or seed
Tools and Notions
Construction requires a pair of straight knitting needles in size 2.75mm (US 2), with a minimum length of 20cm to accommodate the small stitches and yarn weight. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for seaming the finished pieces together, pins for securing pieces during assembly, a few handfuls of toy filling to create the three-dimensional stuffed form, and two 6mm toy safety eyes for facial features.
Gauge and Tension
The pattern specifies a tension of 6 stitches by 8 rows per 2.5cm square. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating a toy of the correct finished dimensions and ensuring the fabric has appropriate density for holding toy filling securely.
Pattern Details
This is a free, downloadable PDF pattern designed for personal use only. The complete pattern spans 5 pages and includes detailed instructions for constructing the avocado face and body components.
