Product Description
The Christmas Gnome Tea Cosy knitting pattern was inspired by Nordic gnomes that are little magical, wintery flokelore people.
The main part of the tea cosy is the body of the gnome which you can hardly see for frosty looking hair. He has a big red hat flopped on his head so that only his big potato shaped nose is peeping out. He's wearing red wellingtons and red mittens and he's holding a Christmas star.
The hat has a lovely Fair Isle design on it of snowflakes, giving a wintery feel. The stars are knitted using short rows, you can find videos of how to do this on Youtube.
The Christmas Gnome is a lovely tea cosy to knit and he look adorable. He's Christmas chic and perfect for those people who love Nordic Gnomes.
The pattern will be available for digital download as soon as you have completed purchase, so you could start knitting, very soon!
Christmas Gnome Tea Cosy
What is Being Made
The Christmas Gnome Tea Cosy is a festive knitted tea cosy designed by TeaCosyFolk. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a decorative and functional cover for a 2-pint teapot or teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups. The tea cosy combines traditional knitting techniques with a charming holiday theme, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to add seasonal flair to their kitchen or create a handmade gift.
Techniques Used
This knitting pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques to construct the tea cosy. The project utilizes stocking stitch, which is created by alternating knit rows and purl rows on the right side, forming the classic smooth, V-patterned fabric that serves as the base for the design. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques including knit 2 together (K2tog), purl 2 together (P2tog), knit 3 together (K3tog), and purl 3 together (P3tog) to shape the cosy and create shaping details. Increasing stitches using the Inc1 method—knitting in the front and back of a stitch on knit rows, or purling in the back and front on purl rows—allows for expansion where needed in the design. The pattern also uses slip stitch techniques, including slipping one stitch (SL1) and passing the slipped stitch over (PSSO) for decorative or structural purposes. A unique aspect of this pattern is the use of double thickness yarn, where the Graphite and White yarn balls are divided and knitted together as a single strand to create enhanced fabric density and visual interest. The cosy is finished using the thread and draw (T&D) method, where the yarn end is threaded through remaining stitches and drawn up tightly to close the top.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the basis of the fabric
- Purl stitch (P) – used in alternation with knit stitches to create stocking stitch
- Knit 2 together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Purl 2 together (P2tog) – a decrease worked on purl rows
- Knit 3 together (K3tog) – a double decrease for more dramatic shaping
- Purl 3 together (P3tog) – a double decrease on purl rows
- Increase in next stitch (Inc1) – creates new stitches by working into the front and back of a single stitch
- Slip one stitch (SL1) – moves a stitch from one needle to another without working it
- Pass slip stitch over (PSSO) – passes the slipped stitch over a worked stitch for decorative decreasing
- Stocking stitch – the primary fabric structure created by alternating knit and purl rows
Materials and Tools
The Christmas Gnome Tea Cosy pattern calls for yarn in Chunky and DK weight options, providing flexibility based on desired fabric density and finished appearance. The pattern specifies Graphite and White yarn as the primary colors used in the design. Knitters will need 5.5mm needles to work with the specified yarn weights. The pattern begins with casting on 28 stitches using double thickness Graphite yarn on the 5.5mm needles, establishing the foundation for the tea cosy. The combination of yarn weights and the double thickness technique creates a cosy with appropriate structure and insulation for holding a hot teapot.
Pattern Overview
This intermediate-level knitting project is suitable for knitters with basic stitch knowledge who are ready to work with shaping techniques and color work. The pattern uses repeat instructions to manage stitch sequences efficiently, such as the ribbing foundation indicated by the *K1, P1; rep from* instruction. The downloadable PDF format from TeaCosyFolk provides complete instructions, making this an accessible project for home knitters seeking a festive, handmade tea cosy.
