Product Description
This is one of the first knitting patterns I wrote a few years ago. I have used it myself many times to create bags in various colours to keep things organised at home and to store small crochet projects.
Why not make a few of these as well to wrap your gifts to your loved ones?
The pattern is for a pouch measuring about 13cm (5in) x 28cm (11in).
Drawstring Pouch by BelaFarCrafts
What Is Being Made
This downloadable knitting pattern creates a practical drawstring pouch designed by BelaFarCrafts. The finished pouch measures approximately 13cm (5 inches) wide and 28cm (11 inches) long after the sides are joined. The design features an eyelet row that accommodates a drawstring closure, making it suitable for storing small items, jewelry, or craft supplies.
Craft and Construction Method
The Drawstring Pouch is created using knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern is worked as a single flat piece on straight needles, then the sides are joined together to form the pouch shape. This one-piece approach simplifies construction while maintaining structural integrity.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners:
- Stockinette stitch (also called stocking stitch) forms the main body of the pouch, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side
- Eyelet row creates decorative holes for threading the drawstring; this row uses yarn overs (yo) and knit two together decreases (K2tog) to form evenly spaced eyelets while maintaining stitch count
- Casting on and basic knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the construction
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The pattern calls for DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn suitable for creating fabric with good drape and structure. The designer used 100% acrylic yarn and suggests Stylecraft Special DK in Shade #1068 (100g ball, approximately 295 meters or 322 yards). One ball of yarn is sufficient to complete the project. The pattern notes that other types of yarn can be substituted, provided the knitter tests tension with a gauge swatch first.
Needles required are 4mm (US 6) single-pointed needles. The pattern specifies working with straight needles rather than circular or double-pointed needles.
Gauge and Tension
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies a tension of 22 stitches and 30 rows over a 10cm (4-inch) square in stockinette stitch. The designer recommends knitting small gauge swatches to verify tension before beginning the full project, especially if substituting yarn types.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty. It uses only basic stitches and straightforward techniques, making it an excellent introductory project for new knitters. The eyelet row introduces a slightly more advanced concept but remains accessible to those with fundamental knitting knowledge.
