Product Description
This pattern is for a pair of cable lace socks. The cable itself is a Japanese cable that is just perfect for socks. There’s enough “give”, partly as a result of the lace insertion, to make the sock very comfortable, but enough unusual cabling combined with the lace to make them interesting to look at and fun to knit.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting and purling, lace knitting and cabling).
The cable stitch is charted only.
This pattern is written for 2 circular needles and is written for sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, and is sized by gauge
The sock pictured here was made with Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock yarn, in colorway, Fjord.
Any lighweight fingering yarn will work for this pattern.
Elkridge Cable Lace Socks by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Elkridge Cable Lace Socks are an intermediate to advanced knitting project designed by Linda Lehman. These socks feature intricate cable work that will challenge experienced cable knitters with a combination of focal stitch cables, mock cables, and side cables incorporating stitches knitted through the back loop for added texture and visual interest.
What Is Being Made
This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for knitting a pair of cabled socks available in multiple sizes: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. The socks showcase decorative cable patterns throughout, combining traditional cabling techniques with mock cable variations and twisted stitches to create a unique and visually complex finished garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Cable Knitting: The primary technique, featuring a focal stitch cable as the centerpiece of the sock design
- Mock Cables: Decorative cable effects that create the appearance of cables without the complexity of traditional cable crossing
- Back Loop Stitches: Side cables incorporate stitches knitted through the back loop, adding dimension and twisted texture
- Circular Needle Knitting: Socks are constructed using two circular needles for seamless, in-the-round construction
- Kitchener Stitch: Used for grafting the toe closure for a professional finish
Stitches and Stitch Work
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting abbreviations including knit (K) and purl (P) stitches as the foundation. Cable stitches form the primary decorative elements, with mock cables providing secondary pattern interest. The incorporation of back loop knitting adds textural variation to the side cable sections, creating a multi-dimensional appearance.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 390 to 450 yards of lightweight fingering weight yarn in 4-ply weight, depending on the selected size. This yardage provides sufficient material for a complete pair of socks with minimal excess.
Needles and Tools: Two circular needles in size 2.50mm are recommended for the Medium size. Needle sizing adjusts by sock size: US #1 or 2.25mm for Small, 2.75mm to 3.00mm for Medium-Large or Large sizes. An optional 12-inch needle in matching size is included for gauge adjustment and construction flexibility. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable crossings, and stitch markers help maintain pattern placement throughout the project.
Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle is necessary for completing the Kitchener Stitch toe grafting and weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is critical for achieving the correct sock fit. The pattern specifies different stitch gauges for each size: 9 stitches per inch for Small, 7 stitches per inch for Medium-Large, and 6.5 stitches per inch for Large to Extra Large, all measured over stockinette stitch. The Medium size is designed to achieve proper fit at 8 stitches per inch using stockinette stitch as the gauge measurement standard.
Skill Level
Rated as Intermediate Plus, this pattern assumes knitters possess foundational knowledge of basic knitting and purling techniques, familiarity with cable construction, and comfort working in the round with circular needles. The combination of multiple cable techniques and their integration throughout the sock design makes this project suitable for knitters ready to advance their cable skills.
