Elyna Sweater – MODE Collection in Rowan Summerlite DK and Kidsilk Haze
The Elyna Sweater is a beautifully crafted knitted pullover from QUAIL STUDIO, part of the MODE Collection. Designed for intermediate knitters, this sweater combines two Rowan yarns held together to create a fabric with subtle sheen and a refined, lightweight drape — perfect for transitional dressing. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF, making it instantly accessible for knitters eager to cast on.
What Is Being Made
The Elyna Sweater is a classic pullover featuring a shaped front neck, set-in or tapered sleeves, and shoulder shaping worked across both back and front pieces. It is sized to fit a wide range of chest measurements, from 71–76 cm (28–30 in) up to 152–157 cm (60–62 in), with actual garment chest measurements ranging from 86 cm to 168 cm. This generous size range makes it an inclusive and versatile pattern suitable for many body types. The sweater is constructed in separate pieces — back, front, and sleeves — which are then seamed together in the traditional flat-knitting method.
Techniques Used
- Flat knitting worked in rows on straight needles throughout all pieces
- Front neck shaping using decreases worked over multiple rows and alternate rows, creating a smooth, gradual neckline curve
- Shoulder shaping via cast-off sequences on alternate rows for a neat, structured shoulder line
- Stitch holder usage for both the centre front and centre back neck stitches, which are later picked up for the neckband
- Holding two yarn strands together — one strand of Summerlite DK and one strand of Kidsilk Haze — throughout the entire garment, a technique that blends the body of a DK yarn with the halo and sheen of a lace-weight mohair-silk yarn
- Ribbing worked on smaller needles for the welts and cuffs, providing elasticity and a neat finish at the lower edges and sleeve ends
- Seaming to join the completed pieces into the finished garment
Stitches Used
- Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) — the primary stitch pattern used for the body and sleeves, creating a smooth knitted fabric
- Rib stitch — used for the cast-on edges and cuffs, worked on the smaller 3¾mm needles to create a firm, stretchy border (the pattern begins with a K2 rib sequence as indicated in the instructions)
- Decrease stitches — used at the neck edge to shape the front neckline gradually over a series of rows and alternate rows
Materials
The Elyna Sweater is knitted using two Rowan yarns held together as one throughout:
- Yarn A – Rowan Summerlite DK in Sailor Blue 470 (50g balls): a DK weight yarn that provides structure and stitch definition. The pattern calls for 8 to 11 balls depending on size.
- Yarn B – Rowan Kidsilk Haze in Navy 708 (25g balls): a lace weight mohair-silk blend that adds a delicate halo, softness, and a subtle lustre to the finished fabric. The pattern calls for 4 to 6 balls depending on size.
Holding a DK and a lace-weight yarn together is a popular technique in contemporary knitwear design, as it allows the knitter to achieve a fabric that is simultaneously lightweight and richly textured, with the mohair halo softening the stocking stitch surface beautifully.
Needles
- 3¾mm (US 5) needles — used for ribbed welts, cuffs, and cast-on edges
- 4mm (US
