Eyes of the Deranged Furballs Knitted Dishcloths
What Is Being Made
Eyes of the Deranged Furballs is a downloadable knitting pattern for dishcloths designed by Tomato68Evony. This project creates functional kitchen textiles with dimensions of 13 inches by 7 inches (33 cm by 18 cm) before blocking. The pattern is suitable for intermediate-level knitters seeking a creative dishcloth design with visual interest and personality.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project worked primarily with worsted weight yarn. The pattern employs intermediate knitting techniques including increases, decreases, and stitch manipulation to create the finished design. Knitters will work with both circular and double point needles at different gauges, allowing flexibility in needle choice based on personal preference and available supplies.
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates a variety of knitting stitches and techniques to construct the dishcloth:
- Knit (k) and Purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the fabric
- Broken rib stitch creates textured sections, as referenced in the gauge measurement
- Yarn over (yo) stitches for decorative increases and lace elements
- Knit front and back (kfb) for directional increases
- Make one right (m1r) for invisible increases
- Purl two together (p2tog) and purl three together (p3tog) for decreases
- Pass previous stitch over (ppso) for slip-stitch decreases
- Slip stitches including slip one with yarn in front (sl1wyif) and slip two with yarn in front (sl2wyif) for stitch management and texture
Materials and Yarn Weight
The pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn and offers flexibility in fiber content. Knitters may choose between non-mercerized 100% cotton (1.7 oz. / 47.3 g, 75.5 yd. / 69.1 m) or acrylic (1.4 oz. / 40.7 g, 67.9 yd. / 62.1 m). Both yarn options produce the same gauge and finished measurements, making either suitable depending on desired care requirements and texture preference.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires two different needle sizes to achieve proper gauge and construction:
- Size 3.50 mm / US 4 knitting needles (circular or double point) for the main fabric
- Size 3.25 mm / US 3 knitting needles (straight, circular, or double point) for finishing or specific sections
- Scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Finished Measurements
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches by 32 rows over 4 inches by 4 inches (10 cm by 10 cm) measured in the broken rib stitch before blocking, using either cotton or acrylic yarn. The finished dishcloth measures 13 inches by 7 inches (33 cm by 18 cm) before blocking, making it a practical size for kitchen use.
