The ribbing around the neckline is totally optional- without it the result is a plunging & sexy neckline, OR with- a tad more conservative, but still cute as heck!

Harbor V Raglan Crochet Sweater by Tina Marie

What Is Being Made

The Harbor V Raglan is a crochet sweater pattern designed by Tina Marie of Tigers Eye Handmade. This garment features a classic raglan sleeve construction, characterized by diagonal seam lines that run from the underarm to the neckline. The sweater is available in a wide range of sizes, including XS, S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, and 5X, making it accessible for various body types and fit preferences. The pattern includes a V-neckline detail, adding a flattering design element to the finished sweater.

Techniques and Construction Methods

This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs raglan sleeve construction, a technique where sleeves are increased gradually along diagonal lines from the cuff to the shoulder. This method creates a comfortable, well-fitted garment with natural shoulder shaping. The pattern is designed to be worked in a specific gauge to ensure proper fit and drape. The sample garment was created with approximately 4 inches of negative ease, meaning the finished dimensions are smaller than the wearer's actual measurements. It is important to note that certain yarn types, such as Lindy Chain, may grow or expand after blocking and wearing, so the pattern recommends sizing down by one size when using yarns with this characteristic. The pattern also suggests sizing down if you fall between two sizes for a more tailored fit.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques

While the specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, crochet sweaters of this construction typically utilize fundamental stitches such as single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet, combined with increases and decreases to shape the raglan sleeves and body. Stitch markers are essential tools for this pattern, with 8 to 10 removable stitch markers recommended to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the construction process.

Materials and Tools Required

  • Yarn: Any fingering weight yarn (weight category 1) that meets the specified gauge. The sample was made with WeCrochet Lindy Chain, a popular fingering-weight option known for its drape and potential for growth after blocking and wear.
  • Crochet Hook: 3.75 mm hook for the main pattern, with a 4.0 mm hook recommended for the initial chain.
  • Notions and Accessories: 8 to 10 removable stitch markers for tracking increases and pattern sections, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming if necessary, a tape measure for checking gauge and finished dimensions, and scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge and Fit Considerations

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for this pattern to fit as intended. The sample medium size, when made with Lindy Chain yarn, measured approximately 36.7 inches around the bust after blocking. However, the pattern notes that the garment expanded to nearly 40 inches after wearing, demonstrating the growth potential of certain yarn fibers. This information is valuable for selecting the appropriate size and understanding how the finished sweater will evolve with wear. The pattern recommends sizing down one size if using Lindy Chain or similar yarns that tend to grow, and also suggests sizing down if you are between two sizes to achieve a more fitted silhouette.

Pattern Details and Design Notes

The Harbor V Raglan is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Tina Marie and published by Tigers Eye Handmade in November 2020. The pattern is copyright protected and cannot be altered, sold, or reproduced without permission. This intermediate-level pattern is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction with shaping and sizing options. The inclusion of multiple size options and detailed schematic information demonstrates a thoughtful approach to pattern design, allowing crafters to customize their finished garment to their preferred fit and body measurements.
