Irene's Wallpaper Colorworked Cowl
What Is Being Made
Irene's Wallpaper is an advanced-level colorworked cowl designed by Christal LK Designs. This knitted cowl features stranded colorwork patterning throughout, creating a sophisticated wallpaper-like design that wraps around the neck. The finished cowl measures 60cm (24 inches) in circumference, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering and everyday wear.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft with stranded colorwork as the primary technique. Stranded colorwork, also known as Fair Isle knitting, involves working with two colors simultaneously in the round, carrying the unused color (known as floats) across the back of the work. This method creates intricate two-color patterns while maintaining fabric integrity and elasticity. The pattern recommends catching floats every 3 to 4 stitches to prevent excessively long floats that could snag or create loose areas in the finished piece.
Stitches and Construction
The cowl is worked in the round using a stranded colorwork chart that is repeated four times across each round. The pattern is worked three times vertically, creating the wallpaper effect. The construction begins with a provisional cast-on of 156 stitches, which allows for a seamless join at the end using the Grafting Method bind-off. This technique creates an invisible seam by grafting the live stitches from the final round to the stitches from the provisional cast-on, resulting in a perfectly continuous fabric with no visible seam line.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The gauge for this project is 26 stitches and 32 rounds in stranded colorwork per 10 centimeters (4 inches) after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for colorwork projects, as it ensures the pattern displays correctly and the finished cowl reaches the intended dimensions. Blocking is recommended to even out the stitches and set the colorwork pattern.
Materials Required
- Yarn: By Night Creation Orion (75% Bluefaced Leicester, 25% Masham blend) in two colors: Main Color (MC) in Campêche (approximately 340 meters) and Contrasting Color (CC) in Chlorophylle (approximately 300 meters). Total yardage needed is approximately 400 meters per 100 grams.
- Needles and Tools: One 60-centimeter (24-inch) 3.5mm (US 4) circular needle for the main knitting; one 3.5mm (US 4) crochet hook; three stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings; scrap yarn for the provisional cast-on; and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and grafting stitches.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty
This pattern uses 4-ply yarn, which provides a balanced weight suitable for creating defined colorwork patterns without excessive bulk. The project is rated as advanced difficulty, making it ideal for experienced knitters who are comfortable with stranded colorwork techniques, managing multiple colors, and executing grafted bind-offs. The combination of colorwork complexity and seamless finishing techniques requires solid foundational knitting skills and attention to detail.
Designer and Format
Irene's Wallpaper is designed by Christal LK Designs, an independent designer. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format, allowing crafters to access the full instructions, charts, and specifications digitally for convenient reference during the knitting process.
