Product Description

Doesn‘t every doll need a silk lace shawl to wear on a walk with her dog on cool nights? It was my daughter‘s idea to knit this shawl for her American Girl Doll, Kit. It‘s the perfect present for any child‘s doll and even a good introduction to lace and shawl knitting. It uses about 100 yards of lace weight yarn and can be knit up in no time. The lace pattern reminds me of a thistle and is has patterning on both right and wrong side rows. It is knit from bottom up and the crescent shape is formed with short rows. Approximate finished dimensions after washing and blocking: 8”/20 cm deep and 15”/38 cm wide at the top edge, 18”/46 cm wide at the bottom lace edge. Skill Level: advanced beginner/intermediate Yarn: Approximately 94.5 yards (86.4m) of lace weight yarn, I used JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18. Needles: US 4 /3.50mm. Kit's Thistle Doll Shawl by Kimberly Gintar

Project Overview

Kit's Thistle Doll Shawl is a charming knitted accessory designed for dolls, particularly 18-inch dolls like American Girl dolls. This delicate shawl serves as an elegant layering piece perfect for doll wardrobes, combining practical knitting skills with decorative lace work. The shawl is an ideal introduction to lace knitting and shawl construction techniques for knitters looking to expand their skill set.

Finished Dimensions

After washing and blocking, Kit's Thistle Doll Shawl measures approximately 8 inches (20 cm) deep at the neck edge and 15 inches (38 cm) wide at the top edge, expanding to 18 inches (46 cm) wide at the bottom lace edge. These proportions create a graceful triangular silhouette that drapes elegantly on doll-sized figures.

Skill Level and Techniques

Rated as advanced beginner to intermediate, this project introduces knitters to fundamental lace knitting techniques and shawl construction. The pattern incorporates lace stitchwork that requires attention to yarn overs, decreases, and stitch markers to maintain pattern accuracy. Blocking is essential to achieve the final dimensions and to open up the lace pattern, making this an excellent project for learning proper finishing techniques.

Yarn and Materials

Kit's Thistle Doll Shawl requires approximately 94.5 yards (86.4 meters) of lace weight yarn—a minimal yardage that makes this project economical and quick to complete. The designer used JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18, a luxurious blend that provides drape and sheen appropriate for a delicate doll shawl. The wool-silk combination offers both warmth and elegance in a fine, lacy construction.

Needles and Notions

  • Needles: US 4 (3.50mm) needles accommodate the lace weight yarn and create the appropriate fabric density
  • Stitch Markers: 10 stitch markers help track pattern repeats and maintain shawl structure
  • Waste Yarn: Optional lifeline for security while working the lace pattern

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch after blocking. While gauge is noted as not critically important for this project, variations in personal gauge will affect final dimensions and yardage requirements. Knitters working at a different gauge should expect their finished shawl to scale proportionally.

Design Inspiration

Kit's Thistle Doll Shawl was created by designer Kimberly Gintar as a gift for her daughter's American Girl Doll, Kit. The shawl concept addresses a practical need in doll wardrobes—an elegant layering piece suitable for outdoor play scenarios. The thistle motif and lace construction reflect both the aesthetic preferences of doll collectors and the educational value of introducing young knitters to lace techniques through a small, manageable project.

Project Characteristics

This downloadable PDF pattern combines accessibility with sophistication. The modest yardage requirement—approximately 100 yards—means the shawl can be completed quickly, making it suitable as a gift project or skill-building exercise. The lace pattern work develops precision and attention to detail while the shawl construction teaches fundamental design principles applicable to larger garments. The finished piece is both functional and decorative, enhancing any doll's wardrobe with a handmade, heirloom-quality accessory.
