Lighter Than Air Shawl by Rachel Beth

What Is Being Made

The Lighter Than Air Shawl is an adjustable crocheted triangular shawl designed for beginner crocheters. The pictured finished shawl measures 64 inches (162.5 cm) wide and 19.5 inches (49.5 cm) deep before blocking, with the pattern spanning 100 rows. The adjustable construction allows crafters to customize the final dimensions by working more or fewer rows according to their preferences and available yarn.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This shawl pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners while creating an elegant, lightweight garment. The pattern uses a row-by-row construction method, with crafters turning at the end of each row and working the subsequent row in the opposite direction. This back-and-forth approach creates the triangular shawl shape and is a common technique for building shawlettes and wraps from the top down or bottom up. The adjustable nature of the pattern means that yarn requirements and final dimensions will vary based on how many rows the crafter chooses to complete, making it flexible for different skill levels and yarn quantities.

Stitches Used

The Lighter Than Air Shawl incorporates several fundamental crochet stitches:

  • Chain (ch) – Used for foundation chains and creating openwork sections
  • Single Crochet (sc) – A short, tight stitch that provides structure
  • Double Crochet (dc) – A medium-height stitch used throughout the pattern
  • Treble Crochet (tr) – A taller stitch that contributes to the airy texture
  • Double Treble Crochet (dtr) – An extra-tall stitch that creates openwork and drape

The pattern also utilizes spaces (sp) created between stitches and skip (sk) instructions to develop the shawl's lightweight, lacy appearance. Stitch markers are optional but recommended for tracking pattern repeats and row progression.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Lighter Than Air Shawl is designed to work with fingering weight yarn, though the pattern is compatible with multiple yarn weights including 3-ply, 4-ply, cobweb, lace, sport, DK, and worsted weights—with the understanding that yarn requirements and finished dimensions will adjust accordingly. The pictured shawl uses KnitCircus's Greatest of Ease fingering weight yarn, which is composed of 80% Superwash Merino and 20% Nylon. The yardage for the pictured shawl totals 800 yards (732 meters) using 100 grams of fingering weight yarn, though the pattern accommodates adjustments based on available yarn and desired finished size.

The recommended crochet hook size is a Size D (3.25 mm) hook. The gauge before blocking is 21–22 stitches and 11.5 rows over 4 inches (10 cm), though the pattern notes that gauge is not critical to success. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and optional stitch markers for tracking progress.

Pattern Notes

The pattern uses US crochet terminology. Crafters should be aware that blocking may alter the final dimensions and appearance of the shawl. The adjustable design makes this pattern forgiving and suitable for beginners exploring triangular shawl construction.
