Line Art Socks by Renate Dziedataja
What is Being Made
Line art socks are a pair of adult-sized knitted socks featuring colorwork design. The pattern is available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large, with finished cuff measurements of 7.5, 8, and 9 inches respectively. The foot length is adjustable, ranging from 9 to 11.25 inches depending on size. These are designed as a downloadable PDF pattern for independent knitters seeking an intermediate-level project.
Techniques Used
This sock pattern employs colorwork knitting, incorporating contrast color sections into the design. The pattern notes that knitters concerned about tension in their floats—the strands of yarn carried across the back of colorwork sections—may benefit from using needles one size larger for the color work portions. The socks are worked in the round using either double-pointed needles or the magic loop method on circular needles, both common techniques for sock construction that eliminate the need for seaming.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques:
- Stockinette stitch forms the main fabric, particularly in the cuff section, creating a smooth, classic sock appearance
- Knit (K) and purl (P) stitches as foundational elements
- Knit two together (K2tog) for decreasing
- Purl two together (P2tog) for decreasing in purl sections
- Slip, slip, knit (Ssk) as an alternative decrease method
- Slip one stitch (Sl1) for various shaping and edge techniques
Materials
The pattern requires fingering weight yarn in 400-meter sections per 100 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size: the main color (MC) calls for 212 to 328 yards depending on size selection, while contrast color (CC) requires 131 to 153 yards. Total yardage ranges from approximately 343 to 481 yards across all sizes. Knitters will need US #1 (2.25 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop construction, with the option to use one size larger needles specifically for colorwork sections if desired. Additional notions include stitch markers to denote the beginning of rounds and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends. The pattern specifies a gauge of 32 stitches and 42 rounds per 4 inches in stockinette stitch on the recommended needle size.
