Loveheart Crochet Cowl Collar by Bored Knitless!
Project Overview
The Loveheart Crochet Cowl Collar is a modern, chunky crocheted neck accessory designed by Bored Knitless! and created as a quick stash-busting project. This beginner-friendly cowl features a contemporary aesthetic with a decorative heart pendant charm that incorporates macramé-inspired elements, making it an ideal accessory for Valentine's Day or year-round wear.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a cowl collar—a tubular neckpiece that drapes around the shoulders and neck—paired with a small heart pendant attachment. The cowl measures approximately 80 centimeters in circumference, providing comfortable coverage for the neck and upper chest area. The heart pendant serves as a decorative accent that hangs from the cowl structure.
Techniques and Construction Methods
The Loveheart Crochet Cowl Collar employs straightforward crochet techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins by holding three complementary yarns together simultaneously, which creates the chunky texture and visual interest characteristic of the design. The cowl is worked in the round using a large hook, starting with a foundation chain that is joined into a circle. The pattern utilizes slip stitch techniques to build subsequent rows, creating a simple yet effective texture. This multi-yarn approach was intentionally designed to reduce yarn stash while achieving a sophisticated, modern appearance with minimal complexity.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch): Used to create the foundation of 40 stitches for the circular cowl base
- Slip stitch (sl st): Employed to join the chain into a circle and to construct subsequent rows, forming the primary texture of the cowl
Materials and Specifications
Hooks: A 20 mm crochet hook is used for the main cowl construction, while a smaller 9 mm hook is used for the heart pendant detail.
Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for three different yarns totaling 3 skeins:
- Yarn A: Wendy Serenity Super Chunky (100g, 80 meters) – provides the primary bulk and structure
- Yarn B: Sirdar Soukie DK (50g, 110 meters) – adds complementary texture and color variation
- Yarn C: Drops Peak Yarn (50g, 45 meters) – completes the three-yarn combination for visual depth
Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle is required for finishing and weaving in yarn ends.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches over 10 centimeters, which helps ensure proper sizing and drape. The finished cowl circumference measures 80 centimeters, making it a generous, comfortable fit for most neck sizes.
Skill Level
Designated as a beginner-level project, this cowl collar is accessible to crocheters new to the craft. The straightforward stitch patterns and simple construction method make it an excellent introduction to working with multiple yarns and creating textured pieces.
