Marta Jumper Knitting Pattern for Women – MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino

The Marta Jumper is an elegant, modern, and geometric women's sweater knitting pattern published by MillaMia. Delivered as a downloadable PDF, this intermediate-level design is described in the pattern itself as suitable for an improving knitter — someone ready to move beyond the basics and explore satisfying stitch combinations that create striking visual results. Despite its sophisticated appearance, the rhythm of the pattern is designed to feel surprisingly achievable once underway.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a classic women's jumper (pullover sweater) featuring a geometric stitch design across the body and sleeves. It is a fitted, structured garment with set-in or shaped sleeves and a defined silhouette. The pattern includes four sizes, designed to fit bust measurements of 77–82 cm (30–32 in), 87–92 cm (34–36 in), 97–102 cm (38–40 in), and 107–112 cm (42–44 in), with actual bust measurements of 92, 108, 123, and 138 cm respectively, offering a comfortable amount of ease. The length to back neck ranges from 53 cm to 59 cm across sizes, and the sleeve length is a consistent 46 cm (18 in).

Construction Techniques

  • Bottom-up construction: The jumper is worked from the lower hem upward toward the shoulders, which is a traditional and widely understood approach that allows knitters to try on the garment as they go and make length adjustments easily.
  • Worked flat: Pieces are knitted back and forth in rows on straight or circular needles rather than in the round, meaning the front, back, and sleeves are each created as separate flat panels.
  • Seamed finishing: The individual flat pieces are joined together using seaming techniques such as mattress stitch, giving the finished jumper a neat, structured, and professionally finished appearance. Seamed garments also tend to hold their shape particularly well over time.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking stitch (stockinette stitch): The tension/gauge is measured over stocking stitch at 25 stitches and 34 rows to 10 cm (4 in) using 3.25 mm needles, confirming this as the primary fabric stitch used throughout the garment.
  • Geometric stitch combinations: The pattern's distinctive visual character comes from simple stitch combinations that create a geometric effect. These are described as having an easy-to-learn rhythm, making them accessible to improving knitters while producing a polished, contemporary result.
  • Ribbing or edging stitches: The use of two needle sizes (3 mm and 3.25 mm) strongly suggests that a tighter stitch — most likely a rib — is used for the welts, cuffs, and neckband, with the larger needle used for the main body fabric.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino — a sport weight yarn sold in 50 g (1¾ oz) balls. The pattern sample is shown in Mist (shade 164), and the quantity required is 9 (11:12:14) balls depending on size. Suggested alternative colourways include Fawn (160), Butterscotch (168), Plum (162), and Seaside (161), offering a range of tones from warm neutrals to rich jewel shades. MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino is a pure merino wool yarn known for its softness, stitch definition, and suitability for garments worn close to the skin.
  • Needles: A pair each of 3 mm (US 2) and 3.25 mm (US 3) straight knitting needles, plus circular needles in both 3 mm (US 2) and 3.25 mm (US 3) — the circular needles are likely used for picking up and working neckband stitches evenly around the collar opening.

Downloadable pdf- simple!

Not finished knitting yet but the textured pattern is lovely and so easy to do! All you need to know is from primary school, number bonds to 10! Possible to knit without looking even for a non advanced knitter. Can’t wait to finish it and wear! Even thinking of a second colour choice!
