What Is Being Made
The One-By-One Beanie is a classic knitted hat designed for adult wearers in three size options: Small (19-20.5"), Medium (21-22.5"), and Large (23-24"). This beginner-friendly beanie features a timeless 1x1 ribbed construction that creates a stretchy, form-fitting design suitable for various head sizes. The pattern uses super bulky weight yarn, making it a quick project to complete.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beanie employs fundamental knitting techniques ideal for beginners. The pattern begins with the Long-Tail cast-on method to establish a secure foundation edge. Construction is worked in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless finished garment. The pattern includes a decrease section toward the crown to shape the hat and close the top opening, utilizing knit and purl decreases to gradually reduce stitches.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch pattern is 1x1 ribbing, which alternates knit and purl stitches in each round. This creates vertical columns of texture that provide excellent stretch and recovery. The ribbed construction continues for approximately 12 inches from the cast-on edge before transitioning to the decrease section. Decreases are worked using K2TOG (knit 2 stitches together) and P2TOG (purl 2 stitches together) to shape the crown.
Materials and Gauge
- Yarn: Super bulky weight yarn; samples were created using Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, requiring 75-100 yards total
- Needles: US 13/9mm circular needles, 16 inches in length. Alternatively, magic loop or double-pointed needles (DPNs) may be substituted
- Gauge: 12 stitches x 14 rounds = 4x4 inches in 1x1 ribbing
- Additional Notions: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle, and scissors
Pattern Overview
The One-By-One Beanie is classified as an Easy skill level project, making it accessible to knitters new to hat construction. The pattern requires casting on 40, 44, or 48 stitches depending on desired size, then joining to work in the round. After establishing the 1x1 ribbed pattern, the knitter repeats the basic knit-purl sequence until the piece reaches 12 inches in length, then progresses to the decrease section to shape and close the crown. The super bulky yarn weight and straightforward stitch pattern combine to create a satisfying, quick-to-complete project.
