This year I have purchased stylecraft yarns and although I prefere some wool in yarn I have been so pleased with these yarns the super chunky the aran and dk. For price softness , lovely to knit with no splitting, and yarn pulls out easily from centre of ball. You can't beat it it also doesn't pill which is a wonderful bonus as the garments stay looking good.
Product Description
This trio of cuddly owls are knitted predominantly in stockinette stitch, with garter stitch eyes, wings and beaks. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the owls are knitted on single pointed needles (not in the round). The owls photographed were knitted in acrylic 4 ply yarns, although you can use DK (double knitting/light worsted) if you prefer. There is no tricky colour-work to master here, as the eyes and beaks are knitted separately and sewn on. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Owl Family Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What Is Being Made
The Owl Family is a collection of three cuddly toy owls designed by Amanda Berry. These are soft, stuffed knitted toys suitable for children and collectors. The pattern allows crafters to create a trio of owls in different color variations, making them ideal for decorative displays or as handmade gifts.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting pattern that uses fundamental knitting techniques to construct three-dimensional toy figures. The owls are created primarily using stockinette stitch, which produces a smooth, classic knitted fabric ideal for toy construction. Additional details such as eyes, wings, and beaks are also worked in knitting, allowing for integrated design elements rather than applied decorations.
The pattern employs seaming techniques to join knitted pieces together, creating the stuffed toy structure. Crafters will use a darning or tapestry needle to stitch pieces together before filling, which is a standard method for assembling knitted amigurumi-style toys.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – The primary stitch forming the stockinette stitch base
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog) – A decrease technique used to shape the owls
- Knit into front and back (kfb) – An increase technique for expanding stitches where needed
Materials Required
Yarn: Up to 50g of DK weight (4 ply sport weight) acrylic yarn per owl, available in six color options: Green, Blue, Pink, Brown, Beige, and Cream. The pattern recommends 100% acrylic DK weight yarns such as Hayfield Bonus DK or similar substitutes for discontinued yarns originally used in the photographed samples.
Needles and Notions: A pair of 3mm (US 2.5) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm is required for working the pattern. Additional supplies include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming pieces together, 250g of toy filling for stuffing the completed owls, and two 6mm diameter black buttons per owl for eyes. A ruler or tape measure is also needed for measuring gauge and finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. The combination of basic stitches, shaping techniques, and toy assembly requires familiarity with fundamental knitting skills and the ability to follow multi-step construction instructions.
