Reptilia Hat by Sara Burch
What is Being Made
The Reptilia Hat is a close-fitting beanie-style hat designed by Sara Burch, perfect for reptile enthusiasts. This downloadable knitting pattern features charted motifs depicting snakes, tortoises, and crocodiles worked into the fabric using stranded colorwork techniques. The hat is available in two sizes: Small (19–20" head diameter) and Large (22–23" head diameter).
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level pattern employs stranded colorwork, a technique where two colors are carried across the fabric simultaneously to create the reptile motifs. The hat is knitted in the round, which creates a seamless, tubular construction ideal for hats. The pattern begins on smaller needles using a stretchy cast-on method, then transitions to larger needles after round 7 to adjust the fabric density and fit. Double-pointed needles are introduced later in the pattern when the circumference becomes too small for circular needles, a standard technique for closing the crown of a hat.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Reptilia Hat uses stockinette stitch as the base fabric, worked in the round to create smooth, V-shaped columns of knit stitches. The reptile motifs are created using the stranded colorwork method, where stitches are worked in alternating colors according to a provided chart. The Main Chart is repeated 4 times in each round, creating a balanced, all-over pattern around the hat's circumference. A stretchy cast-on is recommended to ensure the brim remains elastic and comfortable against the head.
Materials and Yarn
The Reptilia Hat is designed for DK-weight or Sport-weight yarn. The pattern requires approximately 100 yards of main color (MC) and 70 yards of contrasting color (CC). The sample shown uses Malabrigo Dos yarn in Indigo for the main color and Turquesa for the contrasting color, with one skein of each color. Knitters will need a US 5/3 mm 16-inch (40cm) circular needle for the main body of the hat, plus double-pointed needles in the same size for the crown shaping.
