Product Description
This pattern is written in English and standard U.S. crochet terminology.
When my son recently acquired marbles, I thought a much-needed pouch was required to contain them all! The pouch is approx. 4" H and 5" W.
Gauge is not crucial to this project! Use #4 Worsted Weight Yarn and a G (4.0mm or 4.25mm) Hook to make a larger pouch.
Links to helpful tutorials have been included in the pattern.

Riley's Marble Pouch by Samantha Schreyer
Project Overview
Riley's Marble Pouch is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed to create a small, practical drawstring pouch perfect for storing marbles, beads, or other small treasures. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Samantha Schreyer produces a finished pouch measuring approximately 4 inches in height and 5 inches in width, making it an ideal size for children's crafts or gift-giving.
What You'll Make
This project results in a complete, functional pouch with a drawstring closure. The pouch is worked in the round using continuous rounds, creating a seamless cylindrical shape that is both practical and charming. The optional bead embellishment allows for personalization and adds a decorative touch to the finished piece.
Crochet Techniques Used
Riley's Marble Pouch employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for beginners, making it an excellent starter project for those new to the craft. The pattern utilizes the following core techniques:
- Magic Ring Method: The pouch begins with a magic ring, a popular technique for starting projects worked in the round with a closed center
- Continuous Rounds: The entire pouch is worked in continuous rounds rather than joining rounds, requiring a stitch marker to track the beginning of each round
- Back Loop Only Stitching: Most of the pattern is worked in back loops only, creating a textured ribbed appearance that adds visual interest and structure to the pouch
- Increases: Single crochet increases are strategically placed to shape the pouch from a small center to its full width
- Decreases: Invisible decreases are used to shape and finish the pouch seamlessly
Stitches Used
The pattern incorporates a limited range of essential crochet stitches, keeping the project accessible for beginners:
- Chain (ch): Used to create the foundation and drawstring loops
- Single Crochet (sc): The primary stitch used throughout the body of the pouch, providing a tight, durable fabric
- Single Crochet Increase (scinc): Used in the early rounds to expand the pouch from 6 stitches to 18 stitches, creating the basic shape
- Invisible Decrease (invdec): Applied for seamless shaping and finishing
- Slip Stitch (slst): Used to join rounds and secure yarn
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): Included in the stitch key for potential variations or finishing options
- Double Crochet (dc): Listed in the pattern key for reference
Materials and Tools
Riley's Marble Pouch is designed with flexibility in yarn weight, allowing crafters to customize the finished size of their pouch:
- Yarn Weight Options: The pattern accommodates both #1 Fingering Weight and #4 Worsted Weight yarns. Using Worsted Weight yarn with a larger hook (G size, 4.0mm or 4.25mm) creates a larger pouch, while Fingering Weight produces a smaller, more delicate version
- Hook Sizes: A D hook (3.25mm) is recommended for the primary pattern, with the option to use a G hook (4.0mm or 4.25mm) when working with Worsted Weight yarn for increased dimensions
- Yarn Quantity: A single color of yarn is required, simplifying the project and reducing material costs. Contrast color yarn is optional for those wishing to add decorative elements
- Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends and assembling the drawstring. A stitch marker helps track the beginning of each continuous round. A measuring tape ensures accurate gauge and finished dimensions. One optional bead can be added as a decorative embellishment
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern notes that gauge is not crucial to this project, making it forgiving for beginners who may struggle with consistent tension. With a D hook and appropriate yarn, the gauge is 5 single crochets and 6 rows equaling 1 inch. However, crafters can adjust hook and yarn weight combinations to create different pouch sizes without affecting the project's functionality.
