Product Description
SLIDEWAYS SCARF AND HAT PATTERNS BOTH AVAILABLE
I’m really excited about the thought of you getting the chance to knit this beautiful and elegant scarf.
Graceful stripes of colour drift sinuously and smoothly across both faces of the scarf. They slide sideways with ease, and if you squidge those two words together, you get “Slideways”.
Very simple increases and decreases, judiciously placed throughout the pattern, control how the columns of stitches react and interplay with each other in the work.
I could have sent them off in all sorts of wild and crazy directions, creating an array of eye-popping effects, but I’ve chosen to keep this one nice and simple, and although it might look complicated, it’s actually deceptively easy, containing at most, one increase and one decrease, every second row.
Slideways Double-Knitted Scarf by Sockmatician
What Is Being Made
Slideways is a double-knitted scarf pattern designed by Sockmatician. This downloadable PDF pattern creates an elegant, graceful scarf featuring undulating lines of stitches that flow across both faces of the fabric. The design showcases graceful stripes of colour that drift sinuously and smoothly across the scarf, creating a fascinating and beguiling visual effect. The name "Slideways" derives from the way these coloured lines slide sideways with ease across the finished piece.
Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs double-knitting as its primary technique, a method that creates a reversible fabric with distinct patterns visible on both sides of the scarf. Double-knitting involves working with two colours simultaneously to build a thick, durable textile with integrated colour work on every row.
One of the defining features of Slideways is its accessibility for intermediate knitters. The pattern is designed to minimize chart-checking requirements—apart from just four rows, every single stitch is worked with the same colour as the stitch from the row below. This makes it ideal for portable knitting projects, whether you're knitting on the bus, watching television, or attending knit nights.
The scarf construction incorporates very simple increases and decreases that are judiciously placed throughout the pattern. These shaping elements create the characteristic graceful, undulating lines that define the design without requiring complex stitch manipulation.
Stitches Used
While the pattern focuses on fundamental knitting stitches within the double-knitting technique, the primary stitch work involves basic knit stitches combined with strategic increases and decreases to create the flowing, wave-like visual patterns that characterize the scarf.
Materials
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for colour work. The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn. The specific yardage and needle size recommendations are contained within the downloadable PDF pattern.
Difficulty Level
Slideways is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern. Despite using double-knitting—a technique that might seem advanced—the pattern's straightforward colour sequences and minimal chart-reading requirements make it accessible to knitters with some experience who are ready to explore reversible fabric techniques.
