Inspired by the beauty of Californian sycamores, this cardigan is similarly simple, but stands out thanks to its textured details. Wide sleeves, straight lines and a bit of positive ease make this sweater a great layering piece, while fitted cuffs and worsted weight yarn will keep the wearer warm and cozy.
Sycamore Cardigan is knit seamless from the top down with saddle shoulders and dropped sleeves. The button band is worked at the same time with the body. Lines of seed stitch run from the collar over the shoulders and onto the balloon shaped sleeves, which are also embellished with Estonian braids and two types of nupps (video tutorials linked). Sycamore can be worn as a classic cardigan or buttoned as a pullover.
Sample sweater: Model has 34” / 87cm bust and is wearing size B. Yarn used: Harvest Hues Worsted from John Arbon Textiles (65% Falklands Merino, 35% Devon Zwartbles, 219yds / 200m, 100g / 3.5oz), in color Sycamore.
The Sycamore Cardigan is a seamless, top-down knit cardigan inspired by the natural beauty of Californian sycamore trees. This intermediate-level design combines simple construction with striking textured details, making it an ideal layering piece for everyday wear. The cardigan features a versatile design that can be worn buttoned as a traditional cardigan or as a pullover, offering flexibility in styling.
This cardigan is knit seamlessly from the top down using saddle shoulders and dropped sleeves. The button band is worked simultaneously with the body during construction, eliminating the need for separate finishing steps. This method creates a cohesive, professional-looking garment with minimal seaming required.
The Sycamore Cardigan showcases multiple decorative stitch techniques that create visual interest and texture throughout the design:
The cardigan is designed with wide, balloon-shaped sleeves and straight lines throughout the body, creating a relaxed silhouette with positive ease for comfortable layering. Fitted cuffs provide definition at the wrists and help retain warmth. The dropped sleeve construction contributes to the garment's elegant drape and ease of movement.
The Sycamore Cardigan is designed to be knit with worsted weight yarn, which provides warmth and structure while maintaining a wearable drape. The pattern recommends using solid, semi-solid, or kettle-dyed yarn to best showcase the intricate stitch patterns and textured details. The sample sweater was knit using Harvest Hues Worsted from John Arbon Textiles, a blend of 65% Falklands Merino and 35% Devon Zwartbles with yardage of 219 yards per 100 grams, in the colorway Sycamore.
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle seamless construction, multiple stitch techniques, and traditional embellishment methods like Estonian braids and nupps.
