The Killing Tea Cosy by Monica Russel
What is Being Made
The Killing Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed to fit a standard-sized tea pot. This intermediate-level knitting project was commissioned by a fan of the television series The Killing and created as a collectible piece of memorabilia. The finished cosy is crafted from natural fibres to provide insulation and keep tea warm while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the tea pot.
Design and Construction
Both sides of the tea cosy are identical in design, making this a symmetrical project. The cosy features a grid pattern that provides visual interest while remaining achievable at the intermediate skill level. The design includes a decorative stem element that is optional for makers who wish to add additional detail to their finished piece.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Double Pointed Needles: The pattern uses 2 double pointed 4.5mm needles, a fundamental technique for working small circumference knitting projects like tea cosies
- Cast On and Edge Work: Instructions include casting on 41 stitches in colour A and knitting into the back of stitches to form a neat, finished edge
- Yarn Tension Management: The pattern requires pulling yarn tightly across the wrong side of work when moving between sections, ensuring even tension and a professional appearance
- Slip Stitch Technique: Stitches are slipped to the opposite end of the needle without turning, allowing for seamless transitions in circular knitting
Stitches Featured
- Knit Stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout the cosy
- Purl Stitch (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern definition
- Ribbed Pattern: A K2, P2 ribbing pattern is worked in rows 1 and 2, creating elasticity and a classic finished edge that helps the cosy fit securely on the tea pot
Materials and Tools
This project requires 4.5mm double pointed needles and yarn in multiple colours (at minimum colour A, with additional colours needed for the grid pattern shown in the accompanying chart). The use of natural fibres is specified, making this an eco-conscious choice for tea cosy knitting. The pattern includes a detailed grid chart to guide colour work and stitch placement throughout the project.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this tea cosy is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with double pointed needles and follow chart-based patterns. The combination of ribbing, colour work, and circular needle techniques makes it an excellent project for developing these essential skills.
