Product Description
This Winter Days baby blanket pattern is designed to fit snuggly around your baby in the bassinet. It is also the perfect size and weight for keeping your baby warm in the pram. So if you love to get out and about on a chilly day, this is the perfect blanket for you.
The pattern is beginner friendly and as always it includes detailed instructions and photographs to assist you along the way.
I love the two-toned yarn colours to give the blanket a modern edge, but you could always create your own tonal patterns or make the blanket using a block colour.
I prefer using 100% wool but it would be cheaper to make this in acrylic super chunky wool. But remember, higher quality yarns will ensure the longevity of your blanket, making it a beautiful keepsake.
The Winter Days Baby Blanket pattern can be also adjusted to be cot sized if you add a few stitches to the width and length to create your desired cot dimensions - the pattern included tips to do this.
The Winter Days Baby Blanket by The Hook Designs
Project Overview
The Winter Days Baby Blanket is an advanced beginner crochet pattern designed to create a cozy pram or bassinet blanket measuring 63 x 83cm. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer The Hook Designs features a charming two-colour design perfect for welcoming a new baby during the colder months.
What Is Being Made
This project produces a finished baby blanket suitable for prams and bassinets. The blanket incorporates a two-colour colour work scheme, with 5 balls of yarn in colour A and 2 balls of yarn in colour B creating visual interest and depth in the final piece.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Winter Days Baby Blanket is constructed using the Suzette stitch, a decorative stitch pattern that creates texture and visual appeal. The Suzette stitch technique involves working into the same stitch with a single crochet followed by a double crochet, then skipping the next stitch and repeating this pattern across each row. Each row is finished with a single crochet stitch as indicated in the pattern instructions.
The pattern employs the following fundamental crochet stitches:
- Chain (Ch) – Used to create foundation loops and turning chains
- Slip Stitch (Sl St) – Joins rounds and creates seamless transitions
- Single Crochet (SC) – A short, tight stitch used in the Suzette stitch pattern and row finishes
- Double Crochet (DC) – A taller stitch paired with single crochet in the Suzette stitch sequence
Materials and Tools
This pattern calls for super chunky yarn (Category 6 weight), which creates a quick-to-work blanket with excellent drape and warmth. The pattern requires a total of 700m of yarn across two colours.
Suggested yarn options include:
- Abbey Road Born to be Wool by Spotlight – 350m per ball (7 balls total: 5 in colour A, 2 in colour B)
- Crazy Sexy Wool by Wool and the Gang – 350m per ball (4 balls total: 3 in colour A, 1 in colour B)
- The Wool by We Are Knitters – 350m per ball (4 balls total: 3 in colour A, 1 in colour B)
A 12mm crochet hook (size O/17) is required to work with the super chunky yarn weight. Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and scissors for cutting yarn.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an advanced beginner crochet pattern, The Winter Days Baby Blanket is suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore decorative stitch patterns. The Suzette stitch adds visual complexity while remaining accessible to developing crocheters. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.
