Troncos Cowl by Irina Eberhardt

What is Being Made

Troncos is a reversible knitted cowl designed by Irina Eberhardt. This circular neckwear piece is worked in the round and features a striking two-color design that creates visual interest from both sides. The reversible construction means the cowl looks intentional and polished whether worn with either side facing outward, making it a versatile accessory for various styling preferences.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Troncos cowl employs fundamental circular knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern is worked in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming. A stitch marker is placed at the beginning of the round to clearly indicate where each round begins and ends, helping knitters maintain consistent stitch counts and pattern alignment throughout the project. The marker is slipped from the left needle to the right needle at the end of each round, a basic technique that keeps the work organized.

The reversible effect is achieved through strategic color changes and stitch placement. By alternating between knit and purl stitches in a repeating pattern, and switching yarn colors at specific intervals, the cowl naturally reverses itself, displaying one color combination on one side and the opposite arrangement on the reverse. This technique requires no complex shaping or advanced maneuvers, making it accessible to knitters developing their foundational skills.

Stitches Used

Troncos utilizes only two essential knitting stitches:

  • Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch that creates a smooth, V-textured fabric
  • Purl (P) – the reverse of the knit stitch, creating a bumpy texture

The pattern repeats a simple six-stitch knit, six-stitch purl sequence (abbreviated as *k6, p6*) throughout multiple rounds. This straightforward stitch pattern creates visual texture and is the foundation of the reversible design. The pattern is based on a multiple of 12 stitches, allowing for customization while maintaining the structural integrity of the design.

Materials and Specifications

The Troncos cowl is worked in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits up quickly and provides good structure for a cowl. The pattern calls for approximately 150 yards of each color yarn, totaling around 300 yards for the complete project. Contrasting colors are recommended to showcase the reversible pattern effectively and create maximum visual impact.

Circular needles in US size 5 with a 24-inch circumference are required for this project. The 24-inch length is ideal for working a cowl in the round without excessive bulk. The needle size paired with worsted weight yarn creates an appropriate gauge for the fabric density needed in this design.

Design Flexibility

The Troncos pattern offers built-in flexibility for customization. The cowl size can be adjusted by making it longer or shorter to suit personal preference for coverage, or wider or narrower to adjust the depth around the neck. Since the pattern is based on a multiple of 12 stitches, adjustments can be made by adding or reducing stitches in increments of 12, allowing knitters to tailor the finished dimensions to their specific needs.

Skill Level

This pattern is designed for beginner knitters and does not require advanced skilled knitting. The straightforward stitch combination, simple color work, and circular knitting construction make it an excellent project for those developing foundational knitting skills. The reversible nature of the design means minor imperfections are less noticeable, and the repetitive pattern helps build consistency and muscle memory.
