Product Description
I love wide headbands that can double as an ear warmer. Sometimes I want to wear them tight, and sometimes I want to be loose. So I designed this beauty to be adjustable in length, with the option of tying it, using a button, or sewn ends. You decide how long to make it and how tight to wear it! Great for children or adults. This is a quick, satisfying knit, suitable for beginners and the more experienced alike.
Twisty Cable Ear Warmer by That Yarn Stuff
What Is Being Made
The Twisty Cable Ear Warmer is a knitted headband designed to keep ears warm while providing a stylish, adjustable fit. This beginner-friendly project features a distinctive twisted cable pattern down the center and can be customized to any head size. The finished ear warmer measures 4 inches (10 centimeters) wide, with length adjustable based on individual preference. The sample shown measures 19 inches unstretched and 23 inches when stretched, making it versatile for different head sizes and wearing preferences.
Construction and Design Features
This ear warmer is constructed in three distinct sections: decorative ties, a garter stitch increase section, and a cable body. The design begins with an icord tie that serves as an adjustable closure, eliminating the need for buttons or complex fastening methods. The icord ties are worked first, measuring 6 to 7 inches in length. From there, the pattern transitions into a garter stitch increase section that gradually widens the piece from 3 stitches to 25 stitches on the needle, creating a smooth expansion that forms the ear warmer's width. Once the proper width is achieved, the cable pattern begins and continues until approximately 1.25 inches (3 centimeters) before the desired finished length.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Icord (I-cord): A tubular cord created on double-pointed needles, used here for the adjustable tie closures at each end of the ear warmer
- Kfb (knit front and back): An increase technique that creates two stitches from one, used in the garter stitch expansion rows to gradually widen the piece
- Cable twists: Stitches slipped onto a cable needle and held to create the characteristic twisted texture of the cable pattern
- Stockinette stitch: The foundation stitch used within the cable sections, creating a smooth, flat fabric
- Garter stitch: Knit every row to create the textured increase section and edge stitches
Stitches Used
The Twisty Cable Ear Warmer employs several fundamental knitting stitches. Knit (k) and purl (p) stitches form the foundation of the pattern, with knit stitches creating smooth columns and purl stitches adding texture and definition. The cable pattern specifically uses C6B (cable 6 back), a technique where 3 stitches are slipped onto a cable needle and held in back while knitting the next 3 stitches, then knitting the held stitches. This creates the signature twisted cable effect that gives the ear warmer its visual interest and name. The pattern repeats a 6-stitch cable motif across the width of the piece, with purl stitches separating the cables and stockinette sections creating the background fabric.
Materials and Gauge
This project requires US 8 (5 millimeter) double-pointed needles or a circular needle, providing flexibility in needle choice based on personal preference. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable twists. The ear warmer uses 31 grams of worsted weight yarn, making it an excellent project for using up leftover yarn from larger projects. The sample shown was created using Lion Brand Wool-Ease, a popular worsted weight blend. The gauge is 20 stitches over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which helps ensure proper sizing and fabric drape. An optional button may be added as an alternative to the icord tie closure for those preferring a traditional fastening method.
