Product Description
This jacket is knit in a top-down raglan style, but because the sleeves are a different color, it's knit in pieces and seamed together. In this tutorial we'll learn how to construct this sweater, seaming, icord edges, working fair isle, working short rows, and installing a zipper. If you live in the Southern US (like me), this might be the only winter jacket you need this year!
This pattern includes links to NINE instructional videos to walk you through the tricky parts of working the pattern. The videos can be viewed for free here on my website: http://verypink.com/2011/09/07/womans-zippered-lettermans-jacket/
Zippered Letterman's Jacket by Staci Perry
What Is Being Made
This is a woman's zippered letterman's jacket designed by Staci Perry and available as a downloadable knitting pattern. The jacket is engineered to fit like a traditional letterman's jacket with a structured silhouette, offering seven size options ranging from XS to 3X to accommodate actual bust sizes from 30 inches to 52 inches. The pattern incorporates 4 inches of positive ease for each size, ensuring the finished garment drapes and fits like an authentic jacket rather than a fitted sweater.
Craft and Technique
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that combines several knitting techniques to create a polished, wearable garment. The construction uses circular needles as the primary tool, allowing for seamless or nearly seamless construction typical of modern knitting patterns. The pattern accommodates both traditional and contemporary knitting methods, with optional 16-inch circular needles recommended for working smaller circumferences with greater ease and control.
The jacket features a two-color construction with a main color for the body and a contrasting sleeve color, adding visual interest and authenticity to the letterman's jacket aesthetic. This color blocking technique requires managing multiple yarn colors throughout the project, which contributes to the intermediate difficulty level.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch patterns are detailed within the full PDF pattern, the construction method relies on fundamental knitting stitches worked in the round using circular needles. The pattern utilizes double-pointed needles for sections where circular needles become impractical, such as finishing cuffs or working very small circumferences. This mixed-needle approach is standard for intermediate knitting projects and allows for seamless transitions between different sections of the garment.

The Zippered Letterman's Jacket calls for worsted-weight yarn, preferably in wool or wool-blend fibers that provide structure, durability, and the traditional appearance expected of a letterman's jacket. Specific yardage requirements vary by size:
- Size XSmall: 550 yards main color, 340 yards sleeve color
- Size Small: 580 yards main color, 360 yards sleeve color

Essential needles include US size 7 circular needles in both 24-inch and 32-inch lengths for working the main body sections, along with US size 7 double-pointed needles for finishing details. The 16-inch circular needles are listed as optional but recommended for enhanced control and comfort during construction.
Design Details
The zippered construction is a defining feature of this pattern, distinguishing it from traditional cardigans and reinforcing the letterman's jacket styling. The pattern accommodates multiple body measurements and includes detailed sizing information to help knitters select the appropriate size for their desired fit. The inclusion of both main color and sleeve color yardage reflects the two-tone color blocking characteristic of classic letterman's jackets.
