1:12th Scale Motoring Veils by Frances Powell

What Is Being Made

These are historically-inspired miniature knitted veils designed for 1:12th scale dolls house dolls, specifically recreating ladies' motoring veils from the Edwardian era (circa 1906-1908). The pattern includes two distinct styles: an Ecru Summer Veil and a White Winter Veil. Each veil measures approximately 8 inches (20 cm) long by 1½ inches (4 cm) wide when finished, making them appropriately proportioned for dolls approximately 5½ inches (14 cm) tall. These delicate accessories capture the authentic fashion details of the early 1900s motoring period, when women wore decorative veils while traveling in automobiles.

Craft and Techniques

This project is executed entirely through knitting, making it suitable for intermediate-level miniature knitters. The pattern is specifically noted as not suitable for a first project in miniature knitting, as it requires experience working with extremely fine materials and tiny needles. The knitting techniques employed create delicate, lacy finished products that authentically represent the sheer, elegant nature of period motoring veils. The use of fine yarns and ultra-small needles demands precision and control from the crafter.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches including:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the basic foundation stitch
  • Purl stitch (p) – creating texture and pattern variation
  • Yarn over (yrn) – the lace-creating technique that produces the characteristic open, delicate appearance of these veils

These stitches are combined to create the lacy, gossamer quality appropriate to authentic motoring veils of the period.

Materials and Tools

Ecru Summer Veil: Requires approximately 50 metres (55 yards) of ½-ply silk yarn. The pattern notes that sewing thread may be substituted, including Gutermann silk sewing thread or cotton sewing thread, though these alternatives may produce a slightly less lacy and thicker finished product. Worked on one pair of size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles – among the smallest needles available for knitting.

White Winter Veil: Requires approximately 50 metres (55 yards) of No. 100 crochet cotton or cotton sewing thread. This veil is worked on one pair of size 17 (1.40 mm) knitting needles, slightly larger than those used for the summer version.

The use of thread-weight materials rather than traditional yarn reflects the miniature scale of the project and the authentic delicacy required for dolls house accessories.

Pattern Notes

Gauge is noted as not important for this pattern, as dolls house dolls vary greatly in size and proportions, just as humans do. This flexibility allows crafters to adjust their work to fit their specific doll without concern for precise gauge measurements. The pattern is presented in downloadable PDF format and is the work of independent designer Frances Powell, originally published as pattern FP 142 through Buttercup Miniatures.
