Product Description
I adore the look of lace shawls that other knitters create, but not very keen of knitting them myself simply because of the endless repetition of hundreds of rows. However, I desperately needed one for my friends’ Polish-Indian wedding. And I needed it fast :) In order to escape the repeated rows I have decided to knit a stole from top to bottom with a subtle lace edging. Therefore, Angarika stole came to life... The charted design of this stole is very easy to follow, and can be knit up with nearly any lace weight yarn and appropriate needle size. The pattern contains a row by row written instruction of the Lace chart pattern. It was made by Hala and I am highly thankful to her!!! File contents English and Polish versions!
Sample is made with JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk.
Angarika Stole by Hanna Maciejewska
What is Being Made
The Angarika Stole is a lace knitting project designed by Hanna Maciejewska. This downloadable PDF pattern creates an elegant stole—a versatile garment that functions as a shawl or wrap. The stole features intricate lace patterning throughout, making it a sophisticated accessory suitable for both everyday wear and special occasions.
Craft and Techniques
This project is created using the knitting craft. The stole employs advanced lace knitting techniques, which require careful attention to stitch placement and yarn overs to create the characteristic open, decorative patterns. The pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, indicating it is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more complex stitch sequences and pattern reading.
The construction involves working from written row-by-row instructions combined with charted lace patterns. Knitters will work with stitch markers to delineate pattern sections, and the pattern includes both a main lace chart and a specialized lace edging. The edging stitches are integrated into each row of instructions, creating a finished edge as part of the overall construction rather than as a separate application.
Stitches Used
The Angarika Stole incorporates several key knitting stitches essential to lace work:
- Knit through the back loop (K1tbl) — used for edge stitches to create a neat, twisted selvage
- Knit (K) — the fundamental stitch
- Purl (P) — used on even rows for the body of the stole
- Yarn over (YO) — creates the open holes characteristic of lace patterns
- Knit two together (K2tog) — a right-leaning decrease
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK) — a left-leaning decrease that pairs with yarn overs for balanced lace
- Stitch marker (sm) — used to mark pattern repeats and sections
The lace pattern features repeated sequences of decreases paired with yarn overs, creating the openwork characteristic of lace stoles. The pattern includes multiple repeats (noted as "x4" in the instructions), allowing the lace motifs to develop across the width of the stole.
Materials
The Angarika Stole is worked in lace-weight yarn, which is among the finest yarn weights used in knitting. Lace-weight yarn creates the delicate, airy fabric essential to lace shawls and stoles. Knitters will need appropriate needles for lace-weight yarn—typically smaller needles that correspond to the yarn's specifications—and stitch markers to track pattern sections throughout the project.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Hanna Maciejewska. The pattern is provided for personal and non-commercial use only. The instructions include row-by-row written directions for the lace chart pattern and lace edging, with the edging stitches incorporated into each row. The pattern credits Hala Ezzeddine for the lace edging design and instructions.
