Annalisa Knitted Sweater by Sarah Ronchetti
What is Being Made
The Annalisa is an easy-to-wear knitted sweater designed by Sarah Ronchetti. This intermediate-level pattern creates a versatile garment suitable for everyday wear, with thoughtful design features that allow knitters to customize the fit to their individual measurements and preferences. The pattern offers flexibility through two construction options: a buttoned placket version and a non-placket version, giving makers the choice to suit their style.
Construction Techniques
The Annalisa sweater is knit from the top down, a construction method that allows for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the garment as you progress. The pattern is specifically engineered to provide zero ease at the bust while incorporating positive ease over the waist and hips, creating a flattering drape that skims the body without clinging.
The sweater features raglan seams, a classic construction technique where the sleeves are increased gradually from the neckline down to the underarms, creating diagonal seam lines from the neck to the armpit. This design element contributes to both comfort and a refined aesthetic.
A distinctive design feature is the use of reverse stocking stitch on the raglan increases and sides to create a false side seam. This technique adds visual interest and definition to the garment while maintaining structural integrity.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the Annalisa is stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric that forms the main body of the sweater. The gauge for this pattern is 28 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches in stocking stitch, which is essential information for achieving proper fit and drape.
Reverse stocking stitch is used strategically on the raglan increases and side sections, providing textural contrast and helping to define the sweater's silhouette through the clever use of the purl side of the fabric.
Materials and Tools
The Annalisa is worked in fingering weight yarn (also classified as 4-ply), a fine yarn that creates a lightweight, drapable fabric ideal for a sweater that skims the body. The recommended needle size is 3.25mm circular needles, 80cm long, sized to match the specified gauge.
Additional notions required include 9 stitch markers to track raglan increases and pattern sections, and waste yarn or spare circular needles to hold sleeve stitches while working the body, a standard requirement for top-down raglan construction. The buttoned placket version will require buttons, though the specific quantity is detailed within the pattern instructions.
Pattern Features
The pattern includes comprehensive sizing information on page 3 and detailed instructions for customizing fit. Knitters are encouraged to check their gauge carefully to ensure proper fit and the intended drape of the finished sweater. The written pattern is designed to assist in personalizing the fit, making it suitable for various body types and preferences.
The Annalisa is based on a children's version called Bella Mia 1, demonstrating the designer's approach to creating complementary patterns across different sizes and age groups.
