Product Description

Anneal Gibe Beanie is perfect for days when the cold wind blows. The double fabric created by the mosaic colour work will keep the chills at bay. Anneal Gibe Beanie is worked from crown to band in the round. The crown shaping is worked in colour A, with colour B introduced to complete the slip stitch cable colour work that forms the main body of the beanie. The beanie is finished with a modified corrugated rib band. The design is perfect for yarns with a good contrast, even when one is wildly variegated.

The pattern is simpler to work than it appears as only one yarn is used on each round.

The patten includes a patten chart as well as full written instructions.

Anneal Gibe Beanie by Tracey Lee

What Is Being Made

The Anneal Gibe Beanie is a knitted winter hat designed to provide warmth and style during cold weather. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished beanie that works from the crown down to the band, making it an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic stockinette stitch patterns.

Construction Method

The Anneal Gibe Beanie is worked in the round, beginning at the crown and progressing downward to the band. This top-down construction approach allows for easy customization of fit and eliminates the need for seaming. The crown shaping is initiated in colour A, with colour B introduced partway through the pattern to create the distinctive mosaic colour work that forms the main body of the beanie.

Colour Work Technique

The beanie features mosaic colour work, a two-colour knitting technique that creates intricate patterned fabric without the complexity of traditional fair isle or stranded colourwork. Mosaic colour work is particularly effective in this design because it works beautifully with yarns that have good contrast between colours, even when one colour is more dominant or muted than the other. This technique simplifies the knitting process while producing visually striking results.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

  • Knit (K) – The fundamental stitch creating smooth stockinette fabric
  • Purl (P) – Used in the corrugated rib band for textural contrast
  • Make 1 (M1) – An increase stitch used during crown shaping
  • Cable 2 Left (C2L) – A cable stitch involving slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle, holding at front, knitting 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle
  • Cable 2 Left Make 1 (C2LM1) – A variation combining a cable twist with an increase, created by slipping 2 stitches to cable needle, knitting 1 stitch, making 1 stitch using the backwards loop method, then knitting 2 stitches from the cable needle
  • Colour A (CA) and Colour B (CB) – Designations for the two colours used throughout the pattern
  • End of Round (EOR) – Notation marking the completion of each circular row

Finishing Details

The beanie concludes with a modified corrugated rib band, which provides structure and helps the hat stay securely in place. This ribbed finish creates vertical lines of texture that contrast with the mosaic colour work body, adding visual interest and ensuring a comfortable, snug fit around the wearer's head.

Yarn and Needles

The Anneal Gibe Beanie is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits to a gauge of 20 stitches and 25 rows over 10 centimetres (4 inches) in stocking stitch on 4.5mm (US 7) needles. Circular needles in this size are recommended for working the in-the-round construction. The pattern works best with yarns offering good colour contrast to showcase the mosaic colour work effectively.

Skill Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Anneal Gibe Beanie is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore colour work techniques and cable variations. The combination of crown shaping, mosaic colour work, and cable stitches provides a satisfying challenge without overwhelming newer knitters.
