Basalt Cardigan - Knitting Pattern for Women
What Is Being Made
The Basalt Cardigan is a women's button-front cardigan designed by Therese Chynoweth. This knitting pattern is available in seven sizes ranging from extra-small through 3XL, with finished bust measurements from 33¼ inches (84.5 cm) to 58 inches (147.5 cm). The cardigan features a classic length of 24 to 27 inches (61 to 68.5 cm) depending on size, and is designed to fit with 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5 cm) of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit. The finished garment includes seven 1-inch (25 mm) buttons for closure.
Techniques and Construction Method
This cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up approach, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the neckline. The pattern uses a seamed construction method, where individual pieces are knitted separately and then sewn together to create the finished garment. The body and sleeves are worked flat on straight needles rather than in the round, which is a traditional and beginner-friendly approach to cardigan construction.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch used throughout the Basalt Cardigan is stockinette stitch (St st), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat knit side and a bumpy purl side. The pattern incorporates a 13-stitch cable panel that measures 2 inches (5 cm) in width, adding textural interest and visual depth to the design. Cable stitches require the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while working cables, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like appearance in the finished fabric.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Basalt Cardigan is designed to be knitted using Tahki Yarns Kaleidoscope, a worsted-weight yarn composed of 86% superwash wool and 14% acrylic. This fiber blend provides durability and easy care while maintaining the warmth and elasticity of wool. The yardage requirements range from 4 to 7 balls depending on the finished size, with each ball containing 3.5 ounces (100 grams) and 218 yards (198 meters). The pattern calls for the yarn in color #2434 starry night, a sophisticated dark colorway.
Needles, Tools, and Gauge
Knitters will need US 7 (4.5 mm) needles or the size required to obtain the correct gauge. A 32-inch (80 cm) circular needle in the same size is used for the neckband. The pattern requires a gauge of 16½ stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch, making it essential to knit and measure a gauge swatch before beginning the project. Additional tools include stitch markers to denote pattern sections, stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches, a cable needle for working cable stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming pieces together.
Difficulty Level
The Basalt Cardigan is rated as an easy or beginner difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters who have basic knitting skills and familiarity with fundamental techniques such as casting on, knit and purl stitches, increasing and decreasing, and basic seaming. While the pattern includes cable stitches, which require slightly more advanced technique, the overall construction and shaping are straightforward and manageable for newer knitters.
