Product Description

Hurrah for Spring, and for babies showing off their little arms!

The Canonbury Baby Vest is the perfect layering piece. Babies keep their arms free to wriggle and play, and parents appreciate the extra layer of warmth. The fun contemporary style is interesting to knit, and it’s such a small garment that you’ll whip this up in a flash!

It’s pretty unusual to have vertical stripes on knitted garments, but the Canonbury Vest’s clever construction makes these a breeze. The vest is worked sideways, with increases and decreases to shape the neck and armholes. The central panel, which runs down the front and back, features a slipped stitch mosaic pattern. This eye-catching feature is simple and uses only one colour per row, with no complicated stranding or charts.

You’ll need 3 colours of yarn, and you can knit any size with 25g or less of each colour. The smallest 2 sizes need less than 20g of each.

This pattern has been professionally tech edited by the team at Your Crochet & Knitting Magazine.

Canonbury Baby Vest by Sophie McKane

What is Being Made

The Canonbury Baby Vest is a knitted waistcoat designed for infants, available in five sizes ranging from 3 months to 24 months. This garment is worked as a single integrated piece, with the front and back constructed together using a sideways knitting method. The vest is designed to fit with 5-7cm (2-3 inches) of positive ease at the chest for comfortable wear over layered clothing.

Construction Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several sophisticated construction methods that add visual interest and structural integrity to the finished garment. The vest is worked sideways from the right underarm, meaning the knitter begins at one side seam and works across the entire width of the garment. This approach allows for seamless integration of the front and back panels.

Garter stitch panels are strategically placed at the underarm areas, providing both decorative detail and reinforcement at stress points. A slipped stitch mosaic panel is featured at the centre front and back, creating a textured focal point that showcases the interplay of the three yarn colours used throughout the design.

The finishing method offers flexibility: knitters may choose a simple cast-on with mattress stitch seaming for a traditional approach, or employ a provisional cast-on with grafting for a seamless finish. Stitches are picked up along the hem, armholes, and neckline to work garter stitch edgings, which provide neat, durable borders and help define the garment's silhouette.

Stitches Used

  • Stockinette stitch (St st) – the primary stitch forming the main body of the vest
  • Garter stitch – used for underarm panels and all edgings around hem, armholes, and neckline
  • Slipped stitch mosaic – creates the textured pattern at the centre front and back
  • Mattress stitch – optional seaming method for joining pieces
  • Grafting – alternative seamless finishing technique when using provisional cast-on

Materials and Specifications

This project requires 3.5mm (US 4) needles and a 3mm crochet hook for the provisional cast-on method. The yarn is fingering weight (4-ply), worked at a gauge of 23 stitches and 30 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch.

Total yarn requirements vary by size: 47g for size 3 months, 49g for size 6 months, 54g for size 12 months, 56g for size 18 months, and 61g for size 24 months. The yarn is worked in three different colours, with specific colour breakdowns provided in the pattern documentation. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, a stitch holder for managing live stitches, and waste yarn if using the provisional cast-on method.
