Chain Link Armored Cowl Vest
What is Being Made
The Chain Link Armored Cowl Vest is a hybrid garment that combines a knitted cowl neck with a sleeveless vest in one unified piece. This design creates a cozy, multi-functional accessory perfect for fall and winter wear, offering both neck coverage and torso warmth. The finished vest measures 33 inches (83cm) from bottom to top, with the cowl extending 16 inches (40cm) in length. The width laid flat ranges from 15 inches (38cm) in size Small to 19 inches (48cm) in size Large, providing comfortable coverage for various body sizes.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs circular knitting techniques, with the vest worked in the round until the armpit shaping begins. The construction method allows for seamless garment creation, which is characteristic of modern knit design. The circular approach creates a continuous fabric without the need for seaming, resulting in a more polished finished product. The garment is designed to work up quickly, making it an efficient project for crafters seeking faster completion times.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch throughout the Chain Link Armored Cowl Vest is Moss Stitch, also known as Double Seed Stitch. This fundamental knit stitch creates a textured, bumpy fabric that provides visual interest and dimensional appeal. Moss Stitch is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a specific pattern, resulting in a reversible fabric with consistent texture on both sides. The gauge for this project is 9 stitches by 12 rows over 4 inches (10cm) when worked in Moss Stitch.
Materials
The Chain Link Armored Cowl Vest requires Lion Brand Woolease Thick N Quick yarn in a super bulky weight. Depending on the size selected, crafters will need between 4 to 6 skeins, with yardage requirements ranging from 424 yards (387 meters) to 642 yards (587 meters). The project calls for US 15/10mm circular needles measuring 24 inches (60cm) in length, which accommodate the in-the-round construction. Additional materials include scissors for yarn cutting and a darning needle for finishing work.
Difficulty Level
While the product attributes indicate a beginner difficulty level, the pattern itself is labeled as Intermediate. This suggests that while the fundamental techniques are accessible to newer knitters, the circular construction and garment shaping may require some prior knitting experience. The straightforward Moss Stitch repetition makes the stitch work manageable, though understanding how to work in the round and manage armpit shaping adds moderate complexity.
