Product Description
Granny Square Day takes place every year in the UK in August. This year (2020) I decided to design my own square whilst sitting in the sunshine in my garden scolling through instagram looking at all the lovely squares people were posting. Looking to my garden for inspiration, I settled on one of my cistus (rock rose) shrubs and wondered if I could make a granny square with the cistus flower as its centre piece as it's one of my favourite shrubs. So, I set to work and in less than an hour had created this cute little square, which could be used as a centre piece for a granny blanket or cushion. Alternatively you could make a cushion cover or blanket using many squares. There are many colourful varieties of cistus so the creative possiblities are endless.
Cistus Granny Square by Linda Etheridge
What Is Being Made
The Cistus Granny Square is a colorwork crochet granny square designed by Linda Etheridge of Lindale Crochet. This project creates a decorative square motif using four distinct yarn colors arranged across nine rounds, making it suitable for blankets, afghans, cushion covers, or other patchwork applications.
Difficulty Level and Skill Development
This pattern is written for confident beginners who are keen to improve their granny square crochet skills and master a variety of stitches. The intermediate difficulty level makes it an ideal project for crocheters looking to expand their technical abilities beyond basic granny square construction.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Cistus Granny Square employs traditional granny square construction methods with a focus on colorwork technique. The pattern uses a chain ring foundation and works through nine progressive rounds, each introducing new color changes and stitch variations. This multi-round approach allows crocheters to practice consistent tension and color transitions while building confidence with advanced granny square variations.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed using double knit (DK) weight yarn and can be made with any DK weight yarn as long as the same weight is used consistently throughout all four colors. The original design was created using Stylecraft Special Double Knit in the following colorways:
- Colour A (Gold) – used for the chain ring and round 1
- Colour B (Claret) – used for round 2
- Colour C (White) – used for rounds 3 through 6
- Colour D (Pistachio) – used for rounds 7, 8, and 9
Alternative yarn options suitable for this project include Scheepjes Colour Crafter Double Knit and Paintbox Double Knit, or any other comparable double knit weight yarn. A crochet hook appropriate for DK weight yarn is required, though the specific hook size should be selected based on your yarn choice and desired finished square dimensions.
Pattern Format
This is a downloadable PDF pattern written using UK crochet terminology. The free pattern is provided by independent designer Linda Etheridge and includes copyright protections allowing makers to sell finished items for personal use, though mass production is not permitted.
