Product Description
Each year, there is a challenge project created especially for one of the two big sled dog races. The 2020 project is in honor of the Yukon Quest.
The 2020 Sled Dog Race Challenge is a scarf or cowl that celebrates the skill and athleticism of the mushers and their amazing dogs as well as honoring our own canine and feline companions.
The 2020 scarf/cowl has aspects of the wide frozen rivers down which the teams travel, as well as those bodies of water that have not yet frozen and are waving on the shores as the teams pass by. There are waves, both gentle and surging, fish, and lots and lots of paw prints. You can choose from cat or dog paw prints or alternate and have some of both. Knitter’s choice!
For those who love beads, there are beads in this pattern. For those who prefer their projects beadless, there is a beadless option.
Crossing the Yukon Waters Knitted Scarf by Elizabeth Ravenwood
What Is Being Made
Crossing the Yukon Waters is a knitted scarf or cowl design created by Elizabeth Ravenwood that celebrates the athleticism of sled dog racing mushers and their dogs, while also honoring canine and feline companions. The finished scarf measures approximately 9 inches (23 centimeters) wide by 70 inches (178 centimeters) in length or circumference, making it a versatile accessory suitable for wear as either a traditional scarf or a cozy cowl.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This design employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The pattern utilizes a provisional cast-on method, which allows knitters to work in the round or create a seamless join at the completion of the project. Knitters have the flexibility to use either a crocheted chain cast-on or their preferred provisional cast-on technique, with a crochet hook and smooth yarn required for the crocheted chain method. The pattern is worked using straight needles or circular needles, with stitch markers used to track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the project.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The foundation of this scarf is built on stockinette stitch, the most fundamental knit fabric structure. The gauge is established at 6 stitches per inch (or 2.5 millimeters) in unblocked stockinette stitch, which determines the final dimensions and drape of the finished piece. The pattern includes charted instructions that accommodate optional beadwork, allowing knitters to choose between a beaded or non-beaded version of the design. Knitters may add anywhere from zero to 176 or more beads throughout the project, with the option to increase bead quantity for enhanced visual sparkle and embellishment.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for 700 yards (640 meters) of fingering weight yarn, also referred to as 4-ply yarn. Fingering weight yarn is a fine, delicate yarn that creates detailed stitch definition and refined fabric texture.
Needles and Tools: Knitters will need size 4 US (3.50 millimeter) knitting needles, available in either straight or 24-inch (60-centimeter) circular configurations. Additional tools include 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern placement and a crochet hook paired with smooth yarn for executing the provisional cast-on technique.
Optional Embellishments: Beads are entirely optional and range from zero to 176 or more, depending on the knitter's preference for embellishment and visual effect. The charted pattern accommodates both beaded and non-beaded interpretations, providing flexibility in the final aesthetic.
