Product Description
Knit a piece of textile history!
The pattern for this scarf is based on Barbara Walker’s interpretation of the Dura-Europos “knitting” fragment (later proven to be nalbinding, not knitting at all.
The scarf is reversible and knits up quickly because of its shape. It's really like knitting only half a scarf!
The pattern includes instructions for both DK and worsted weight yarn. Scarf requires approximately 300 yards of DK or 220 yards of worsted.
Europos Scarf by Triona Murphy
What is Being Made
The Europos Scarf is a knitted accessory designed by Triona Murphy, measuring approximately 72 inches [183 cm] long and 5.5 inches [14 cm] across at its widest point. This is a one-size scarf suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a refined, wearable project with textural interest.
Available Yarn Options
This pattern is offered in two yarn weight versions, allowing knitters to choose based on their preferred fiber and yardage requirements:
- DK Weight Version: Rowan RYC Cashsoft DK (57% merino, 33% microfiber, 10% cashmere; 142 yards/130 meters per 50g skein) in color 525, Kingfisher. This version requires 3 skeins total.
- Worsted Weight Version: Crystal Palace Yarns Mochi Plus (80% merino, 20% nylon; 95 yards/87 meters per 50g skein) in color 551. This version also requires 3 skeins total.
Both yarn options feature high-quality merino content blended with microfiber or nylon for durability and drape, making them ideal for a scarf that will maintain its shape and softness through regular wear.
Needles and Tools Required
- DK Weight Version: US #6 [4.0 mm] needles
- Worsted Weight Version: US #8 [5.0 mm] needles
- Stitch marker
- Yarn needle for finishing
Gauge and Sizing
For the DK weight version, the gauge is 30 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches [10 cm] when worked in k1, p1 rib on US #6 [4.0 mm] needles with slight stretching. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions and drape of the scarf.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Europos Scarf employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters:
- Cast On (CO): The foundation technique used to create the initial stitches on the needle.
- Knit and Purl Stitches (k, p): The basic building blocks of the pattern, likely combined in a ribbed structure based on the gauge notation of k1, p1 rib.
- Slip Marker (sl m): A technique for moving stitch markers along the needles to track pattern repeats and sections.
- Purl Lifted Increase (PLI): An increase method worked by inserting the right needle into the purl bump directly below the next stitch on the left needle, lifting this bump onto the left needle with the right leg positioned to the front. This technique creates a subtle, nearly invisible increase that maintains the integrity of ribbed or textured stitch patterns.
Pattern Structure
The scarf features a k1, p1 ribbed construction, a classic stitch pattern that creates vertical columns of alternating knit and purl stitches. This ribbed structure provides excellent elasticity, texture, and visual interest while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters. The use of the purl lifted increase suggests that shaping occurs within the pattern, likely to create the tapered or contoured width of the finished scarf.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this project assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches and can follow written instructions with abbreviations. The inclusion of a specialized increase technique (PLI) and stitch marker management adds a layer of technical skill beyond absolute beginner projects, making this an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their technique repertoire.
