Product Description
The gentian granny square is inspired by the beautiful bright blue gentians that bloom in the Alps and also in Teesdale in the UK. I wanted to represent their tiny bright blue flowers that pop out of the meadow and found the Kingfisher blue cotton and a 3D design perfect to do so. This square is made of a four small squares each with a flower to represent how the gentians grow in small groups but slightly apart from each other.
This square would be perfect to make into a mini cushion or serveral squares could be sewn together to make a larger cushion or even a blanket.
Gentian 8 Inch Square by Crochet Cloudberry
What is Being Made
The Gentian 8 Inch Square is a classic granny square crochet pattern designed by Crochet Cloudberry. This downloadable PDF provides complete instructions for creating an approximately 10cm (8 inch) finished square using UK crochet terminology. The square is ideal for crafters looking to build a collection of modular pieces that can be joined together for larger projects such as blankets, afghans, or garments, or used individually as coasters, appliqués, or decorative elements.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This intermediate-level crochet pattern employs several fundamental and decorative techniques to create visual interest and structure. The square is constructed using a magic circle foundation, which allows for a seamless center point and is a popular modern approach to starting granny squares. The design incorporates picot stitches as decorative embellishments, specifically ch-3-picots (chain-3 picots) that are placed on top of stitches to create delicate, dimensional details along the edges and throughout the pattern. This combination of traditional granny square construction with picot detailing adds elegance and texture to the finished piece.
Stitches Used
The Gentian Square utilizes a variety of crochet stitches to build its structure and decorative elements:
- Chain (Ch) – the foundational stitch used for creating the magic circle and spacing between other stitches
- Double Crochet (Dc) – a shorter stitch that provides density and structure
- Treble (Tr) – a taller stitch that creates openness and drape within the square
- Double Treble (Dtr) – an even taller stitch used for creating height and visual variation
- Slip Stitch (Ss) – used for joining rounds and finishing edges seamlessly
- 2 Treble Together (2trtog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count and shapes the pattern
- 3 Double Treble Cluster (3dtr clust) – a decorative cluster stitch that adds texture and visual interest
- Ch-3-Picot – a decorative picot variation placed on top of stitches for embellishment
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Gentian Square pattern is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn, which is a light, versatile yarn weight suitable for creating fabric with moderate drape and definition. The pattern specifies Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in three colorways: Champagne White, Kingfisher Blue, and Lime Green. These colors create a sophisticated and nature-inspired palette reminiscent of the gentian flower. The pattern recommends using a 4mm crochet hook to achieve the correct tension and finished square size of approximately 10cm.
For crafters interested in yarn substitution, the pattern notes that other DK weight yarns with similar properties may be used as alternatives. However, it is recommended that you crochet and measure your first square to ensure it reaches the intended finished size of approximately 10cm before committing to a full project. This attention to gauge ensures consistent sizing across multiple squares, which is essential when joining squares together for larger projects.
Pattern Information and Designer
This pattern is created and copyrighted by Catherine Venner of Crochet Cloudberry. The downloadable PDF format makes it convenient for immediate access and printing. The designer permits small-quantity production for sale, with a request to credit and link to Crochet Cloudberry whenever possible. The pattern uses UK crochet terminology, so crafters should ensure familiarity with UK stitch names, which differ from US terminology (for example, UK treble equals US double crochet).
