Product Description
This sweater is a real hoot! Owls perch together around the body of this cardigan, showing off their plumage in bright autumn colors. The Hootenanny cardigan is worked flat from the bottom up to the underarms, sleeves are worked separately and attached, and then the raglan yoke is worked flat as one piece. Short rows shape the back neck for a comfortable fit. While the stranded knitting design calls for up to four colors at once, all shaping is done in one color only. A second version of the chart is included with only two colors per row, for those who choose to use the duplicate stitch method to add extra colors after knitting is complete.
Hootenanny Cardigan by Bridget Pupillo
What Is Being Made
The Hootenanny Cardigan is a knitted cardigan sweater featuring a charming owl motif design. Owls are arranged around the body of the garment, displaying their plumage in bright autumn colors. This intermediate-level knitting project combines colorwork design with thoughtful shaping techniques to create a comfortable, wearable cardigan.
Construction Method
The Hootenanny Cardigan is constructed using a strategic flat knitting approach. The body is worked flat from the bottom up to the underarms, establishing the main canvas for the owl colorwork design. The sleeves are knitted separately and then attached to the body. The raglan yoke is subsequently worked flat as one continuous piece, creating smooth transitions from body to sleeves. Short rows are strategically incorporated to shape the back neck, ensuring a comfortable and well-fitted neckline.
Stitches and Techniques
- Stranded Knitting: The primary colorwork technique used throughout the design, allowing up to four colors to be worked simultaneously within single rows for the owl motif
- Duplicate Stitch: An alternative method provided for crafters who prefer to add extra colors after the knitting is complete, with a simplified two-color-per-row chart included for this purpose
- Short Rows: Used to shape the back neck for improved fit and comfort
- Flat Knitting: The entire cardigan is worked flat rather than in the round, allowing for easier colorwork management and construction
Materials
This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the detailed owl colorwork. The pattern accommodates multiple colors for the stranded knitting technique. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are required, along with tools for attaching separately knitted sleeves to the body.
Difficulty Level
The Hootenanny Cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the stranded knitting colorwork may appear complex, the pattern thoughtfully manages difficulty by limiting all shaping to a single color only, allowing knitters to focus on colorwork without simultaneous shaping challenges. The inclusion of an alternative two-color chart demonstrates designer consideration for varying skill levels within the intermediate range.
