Product Description

To the fan of the BBC’s modern retelling of Sherlock Holmes, this line is quickly recognized as both an apology and a rare declaration of friendship. In any incarnation, though, Holmes and Watson make a unstoppable team, and this cowl represents the timeless duo. I have derived the chevron/cable combination from the cabling of John’s now-famous jumper, and replaced part of that pattern with a twisted-stitch DNA cable representing Sherlock’s scientific mind. It takes both of them together to make the unified scarf.

Instructions are included for two size options: a snugger, neck-hugging cowl, and a longer version that can be draped or doubled up for warmth.

I've Just Got One Cowl by Amy Noelle Walker

Project Overview

I've Just Got One is an advanced knitting pattern for a cowl designed by Amy Noelle Walker. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a sophisticated neckwear option with two size options to suit different preferences and body types.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a cowl—a circular neckwear garment that drapes around the shoulders and neck. The cowl measures 6 inches deep with two circumference options: 20 inches for a closer fit or 41 inches for a more generous, deeply draped silhouette. As a non-fitted garment, the cowl prioritizes drape and visual interest over precise sizing.

Yarn and Needles

The pattern requires 150 yards of fingering weight yarn for the smaller size or 300 yards for the larger size. Knitters work on US size 6 circular needles, though the designer notes that needle size can be adjusted based on personal preference for drape. A single stitch marker completes the material requirements.

Gauge and Fit

The designer's gauge was 6 stitches to the inch in stockinette stitch after blocking. However, because this is a non-fitted garment, gauge flexibility is built into the design. Knitters can adjust needle size to achieve their desired drape without compromising the final garment, making this pattern forgiving for those whose gauge differs slightly from the specified measurements.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

I've Just Got One is classified as an advanced knitting pattern due to its use of specialized cable techniques. The pattern employs multiple cable stitch variations that create textured, twisted details throughout the cowl.

The cable stitches used in this pattern include:

  • C2Fk: A front-facing cable combining knit stitches, created by slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding it to the front, knitting one stitch, then knitting the held stitch through the back loop
  • C2Fp: A mixed cable combining a purl and knit through the back loop, worked by slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding to front, purling one stitch, then knitting the held stitch through the back loop
  • C2Bk: A back-facing cable with knit stitches through the back loop, created by slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding to back, knitting one stitch through the back loop, then knitting the held stitch
  • C2Bp: A mixed cable combining a knit through the back loop and purl, worked by slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding to back, knitting one stitch through the back loop, then purling the held stitch
  • C3F: A three-stitch front cable created by slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding to front, knitting two stitches, then knitting the held stitch
  • C2Ftbl: A cable with both stitches worked through the back loop, made by slipping one stitch to a cable needle, holding to front, knitting one stitch through the back loop, then knitting the held stitch through the back loop

These cable techniques create dimensional texture and visual complexity, making the cowl an engaging project for experienced knitters seeking to expand their technical skills. The use of stockinette stitch as the base fabric provides a smooth canvas that allows the cable work to stand out prominently.
