Product Description
Kelsingra, the city of dragons and their Elderlings, is full of light. From the globes along hallways, the jidzin strips that light your path with just a touch, or the windows that get larger the higher you climb until you reach the magnificent windows that give a panoramic view of the city from the Map Tower, Kelsingra is a city of light. This full-sized, semi-circular shawl brings this fantastic city from Robin Hobb's Rain Wild series to life.
Either fingering weight or lace weight yarn can be used for this pattern. It has been tested in both weights to excellent effect.
Bead placement has been noted on the pattern, but there are plenty of places to add more or you can eliminate them entirely.
Kelsingra Shawl by Elizabeth Ravenwood
Project Overview
Kelsingra is an intermediate-level knitted shawl inspired by the fantastical city of dragons and Elderlings from Robin Hobb's Rain Wild series. This downloadable PDF pattern captures the luminous quality of Kelsingra through thoughtful stitch work and shaping, creating a finished accessory measuring approximately 65 inches wide by 32 inches deep (165 cm by 81 cm).
What Is Being Made
This is a large triangular shawl designed to drape elegantly across the shoulders. The design celebrates the city of Kelsingra's famous light sources—from enchanted globes illuminating hallways to the jidzin strips that glow at a touch, and the progressively larger windows of the Map Tower culminating in panoramic views. The shawl translates these elements of light and architecture into a wearable knitted garment.
Yarn and Materials
Knitters have flexibility in yarn weight selection for this pattern. The shawl requires either 1000 yards (914 meters) of fingering weight yarn or 880 yards (805 meters) of lace weight yarn, allowing crafters to choose based on desired drape and finished dimensions. The pattern accommodates both yarn weights with adjusted needle sizes.
Essential notions include:
- Size 5 US (3.75 mm) knitting needles for fingering weight yarn
- Size 4 US (3.5 mm) knitting needles for lace weight yarn
- 4 regular stitch markers
- 4 locking stitch markers or coilless safety pins
- Approximately 255 size 6/0 or 8/0 beads (optional embellishment)
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Kelsingra is constructed using stockinette stitch as the foundation, creating smooth, classic fabric. The pattern incorporates stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping increases throughout the triangular construction. The inclusion of optional beads allows for additional embellishment, which can be incorporated during knitting or added afterward depending on the knitter's preference and bead-working experience.
The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with reading pattern instructions, managing multiple stitch markers, and executing increases or decreases as directed. The pattern does not depend on precise gauge matching, making it more forgiving for knitters working with different yarn weights or needle sizes.
Finished Dimensions and Blocking
The shawl reaches approximately 65 inches across the top edge and 32 inches in depth when worn. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical for this design, meaning slight variations in tension will not significantly impact the finished garment. Blocking is recommended to enhance the drape and open up stitch definition, particularly if lace weight yarn is used.
