Product Description
Knit Your Cat Pillow is designed for you to be able to pick yarns and colors similar to your cat and use those yarns to add personalizations to the pillow front. One of my test knitters, made a nice memorial pillow for a cat that recently passed away. I suggest having a high quality photograph handy if you wish to embroider unique facial markings. Shown in DK weight angora (cost was about $65 but I had enough yarn for 2 pillows). For a cheaper yarn that is still fuzzy, I stranded sock weight wool with lace weight mohair. Pillow is worked in 7 pieces (front, back, 2 front ears, 2 back ears, and edging) and sewn together at the end. The angora and mohair yarns are very forgiving to cover the finishing threads. Pillow size is approximately 10 by 10 inches. To save a few dollars, I used stranded silk sock yarn for the back, saving the angora for the front and edging.
The bottom two-thirds of the face is done with 3 balls (or large bobbins) of yarn in color-work. The rest of the pieces (

What is Being Made
The Knit Your Cat Pillow is a customizable knitted cushion design that allows crafters to create a personalized pillow featuring their own cat. This project produces an approximately 10 by 10 inch decorative pillow that can serve as a cherished keepsake, including memorial pillows for beloved cats. The design encourages personalization through yarn color selection and optional embroidered facial markings to match specific cat characteristics.
Construction and Techniques
This knitting project is constructed from seven separate pieces that are knitted individually and then sewn together at the end. The pieces include one front panel, one back panel, two front ears, two back ears, and edging. This modular approach allows for flexible yarn choices across different sections of the pillow. The pattern supports stranding techniques, where multiple yarn weights and fiber types are combined to achieve desired texture and appearance. The fuzzy nature of recommended yarns helps conceal finishing threads during the assembly process.
Stitches and Knitting Methods
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern excerpt, the design employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for DK weight yarn. The pattern accommodates stranding methods, which involves working with multiple yarns simultaneously to create color variations and textural effects. This technique is particularly useful for adding personalized details to the pillow front.
Materials and Yarn Options
The Knit Your Cat Pillow offers flexible yarn weight and fiber options to suit different budgets and desired aesthetics:
- Premium Option: DK weight angora yarn, which creates a soft, fuzzy finish. The designer notes this option costs approximately $65 but yields enough yarn for two pillows.
- Budget-Friendly Option: A combination of stranded sock weight wool paired with lace weight mohair, which provides a similarly fuzzy texture at lower cost.
- Mixed Approach: Stranded silk sock yarn for the back panel combined with angora for the front and edging, allowing crafters to allocate premium yarns strategically.
The pattern requires knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn. The fuzzy fiber characteristics of angora and mohair are noted as particularly forgiving during finishing, making them ideal for concealing seaming threads.
Personalization Features
The design encourages crafters to select yarn colors and types that match their specific cat's appearance. The pattern suggests having a high-quality photograph of the cat available when working on the project. For those wishing to add unique facial markings such as stripes, spots, or other distinctive features, embroidery can be incorporated into the finished pillow front, allowing for precise representation of individual cat characteristics.
