Product Description
This shawl was designed during my summer vacations in Britanny, France. It was inspired by the stunning views, by the seaweeds, the hortensias...
It is actually an easy project, and I have video tutorials to help you if you are a visual learner. I made them for me, but my daughters love them, so it would be suitable for kids too. In the pattern The shawl is presented in a DK version and in a fingering version.
This is the English version of the shawl, in US terms.
If you're looking for the French version or the Portuguese version please check out the links on Ravelry.
Enjoy your crochet time!
Le Chale Tregastel Crochet Shawl
Project Overview
Le Chale Tregastel is a beginner-friendly asymmetrical crochet shawl designed by Paula C. from Accrochezvosaiguilles.com. This downloadable PDF pattern is inspired by the designer's memorable moments spent at Trégastel, a charming beach town in Brittany, northwest France. The shawl is designed to be a versatile accessory perfect for shorter day trips and relaxing crochet sessions, evoking the joy of seaside moments with loved ones.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates an asymmetrical shawl—a triangular or crescent-shaped wrap that drapes beautifully and offers flexible styling options. The asymmetrical construction means one side is longer or shaped differently than the other, adding visual interest and dimension to the finished piece. The shawl is suitable for layering on cooler days and can be worn in multiple ways depending on personal preference and occasion.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The shawl uses fundamental crochet techniques accessible to beginners. The pattern begins with a foundation row of single crochet stitches, establishing the base from which the shawl is built. The asymmetrical design is achieved through strategic increases and stitch placement that create the distinctive shape as you work outward from the foundation.
Stitches Used
- Single Crochet (SC) – Used to establish the foundation row and create structure throughout the pattern
Materials Required
This pattern is designed as a one-skein project, making it an economical and quick crochet undertaking.
- Yarn: 1 ball of DMC Brio (100 g, 345 m / 377 yds) – a light DK weight yarn that provides excellent drape and definition for shawl stitches
- Crochet Hook: 6mm / J-10 US size
Yarn Weight and Fiber Characteristics
DMC Brio is a DK (double knitting) weight yarn, classified as 4-ply, offering a balance between structure and flow. This weight is ideal for shawl patterns as it creates fabric with good stitch definition while remaining lightweight enough for comfortable wear. The yardage provided (345 m / 377 yds) is sufficient for a complete asymmetrical shawl suitable for layering and accessorizing.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for crocheters new to shawl construction or those seeking a straightforward, meditative project. The use of basic single crochet stitches and a simple foundation means minimal experience is required to complete this design successfully.
Pattern Format
Le Chale Tregastel is available as a free downloadable PDF pattern with instructions provided in English. The pattern uses US crochet terminology, ensuring clarity for American and international crocheters familiar with standard US terms.
