Little Keene Knitted Sweater by Alicia Plummer

What Is Being Made

Little Keene is a top-down seamless knitted sweater designed for children in sizes 2 through 12. This garment features a classic pullover construction that begins at the neckline and transitions from flat knitting to circular knitting as the piece progresses. The finished chest measurements range from 24 inches (61 cm) for size 2 up to 33.25 inches (84.5 cm) for size 12, making it suitable for a range of children's ages and sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Little Keene sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques that make it accessible to beginners while producing a polished, professional-looking garment:

  • Top-down construction: The sweater is worked from the neckline downward, allowing for easy fitting adjustments and the ability to try on the garment as you knit
  • Seamless construction: The garment is knitted as one continuous piece with no seams to sew together, reducing finishing work and creating a more comfortable wear experience
  • Flat-to-round transition: The pattern begins with flat knitting at the neckline using straight needles, then transitions to circular needles and is worked in the round for the body and sleeves
  • Increases for shaping: Strategic increases at marked points create the sleeve caps and allow the body to expand to the desired finished dimensions
  • Stitch markers: Four place markers are used throughout to denote key sections (front, sleeves, and back) and maintain pattern structure

Stitches Used

Stockinette Stitch is the primary stitch throughout the Little Keene sweater. This fundamental knit stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. Stockinette stitch is achieved by alternating knit stitches on right-side rows with purl stitches on wrong-side rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round. The gauge for this pattern is 13 stitches and 16 rows per 4-inch (10 cm) square in Stockinette Stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Little Keene sweater is designed to be knitted with Berocco Ultra Alpaca Chunky yarn in the colorway Steel Cut Oats (#7214). The chunky yarn weight allows for relatively quick knitting and creates a warm, cozy fabric suitable for children's wear. Yardage requirements vary by size: size 2 requires 350 yards (325 meters), while the largest size 12 requires 750 yards (725 meters). The pattern calls for 3 to 6 skeins depending on the child's size.

Needles and Tools

Two needle sizes are required to accommodate the gauge and construction method. US size 11 (8.0 mm) circular and double-pointed needles are used for the main body of the sweater, while US size 10.5 (6.5 mm) circular and double-pointed needles are used for ribbed edgings or other sections requiring a tighter gauge. Knitters should verify that their needle choice produces the correct gauge of 13 stitches and 16 rows per 4 inches. Additional tools include a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and 4 place markers to track pattern sections during construction.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to garment construction. While the sweater involves multiple techniques—including cast-on, basic stitches, increases, and transitioning between flat and circular knitting—each technique is fundamental and manageable for someone learning to knit wearables. The use of chunky yarn means stitches are large and easy to see, reducing the likelihood of mistakes and making corrections straightforward if needed.

Excellent service

Little Keene is a great pattern, easy to follow if you like to knit in the round, which I love since it avoids seaming together pieces. But the sizing is way off. I made the size 10 which I thought was for a child age ten and it ended up fitting me. I am an adult size 6-8. The sweater looks great and I wear it but I would not have made myself a pink sweater. It came out so well I could not bring myself to take it apart. I made the size 2 in a different color (still using Universal Yarn Major)...
