Moda Fabrics Charm Thursday Quilt Pattern Summary
The Charm Thursday Quilt by Moda Fabrics is a downloadable PDF quilting pattern that produces a finished quilt measuring 65" x 78". This is a cheerful, scrappy charm quilt designed for intermediate quilters who want to make the most of precut fabric collections. Best of all, this pattern is available as a free download, making it an excellent choice for quilters looking to use up charm packs from their stash.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a full-size quilt top built entirely around a single repeating block. The design philosophy embraces the classic tradition of the charm quilt, where the beauty and visual interest come from the mix of fabrics and values rather than complex piecing. The interplay of light and dark fabrics is central to the design, creating contrast and movement across the quilt surface. The finished quilt at 65" x 78" is a generous lap or throw size, suitable for everyday use.
Materials Required
Fabric Options
Moda Fabrics offers two ways to gather your fabrics for this project, giving quilters flexibility depending on what they have on hand:
- Charm Packs: 7 charm packs (pattern assumes approximately 40 squares of 5" x 5" per pack with an equal mix of light and dark fabrics). A total of 150 light and 120 dark charm squares are used.
- Fat Quarters: 13 light fat quarters and 10 dark fat quarters as an alternative to charm packs. From each fat quarter, cut 3 strips measuring 5" x 22", then sub-cut into 12 squares of 5" x 5".
- Binding: ⅝ yard of fabric, cut into 8 strips of 2½" x WOF (width of fabric, approximately 42")
- Backing: 5½ yards of fabric
Tools and Notions
- Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and quilting ruler for accurate cutting
- Sewing machine capable of an accurate ¼" seam allowance (all seam allowances in this pattern are ¼")
- Quilting thread in a coordinating color
- Iron and pressing surface for seam pressing
Cutting Instructions
Precise cutting is essential to the success of this pattern. The cuts required are straightforward, making this an approachable project for intermediate quilters:
- From light charm squares: cut 120 squares measuring 2½" x 2½" (cut from 30 of the light 5" x 5" charm squares)
- From dark charm squares: cut 240 rectangles measuring 2½" x 5" (cut from 120 dark 5" x 5" charm squares, yielding 2 rectangles per square)
- The remaining light 5" x 5" charm squares are used whole in the block construction
Block Construction and Techniques
The Single Block Design
One of the most appealing features of the Charm Thursday Quilt is that it uses just one block repeated across the entire quilt. This simplicity makes the pattern highly accessible while still producing a visually dynamic finished quilt. The block combines whole charm squares with sub-cut rectangles and smaller squares to create a structured yet scrappy look.
Piecing Steps
- Step 1: Sew one 2½" x 5" dark rectangle to one 5" x 5" light charm square. Repeat to make 120 units.
- Step 2: Sew one 2½" x 5" dark rectangle to one 2½" x 2½" light square to create a second unit type. Repeat as directed.
- Units are then combined and arranged to complete the block and the overall quilt layout.
