Ogham Large Love/ Grá Chart by NezumiWorld
What Is Being Made
The Ogham Large Love/ Grá Chart is a decorative crochet design featuring the ancient Irish Ogham script, specifically the word "Grá" (meaning love in Irish). This downloadable PDF pattern allows crafters to create a filet crochet chart-based decoration suitable for display or incorporation into larger projects. The design celebrates Celtic heritage through the visual representation of Ogham symbols in a structured grid format.
Craft and Technique
This project is created using filet crochet, a technique that produces an open, lacy fabric with a geometric appearance. Filet crochet works by alternating solid blocks and open spaces to create patterns that read like a chart or graph. The designer provides two grid options for crafters to choose from based on their desired finished size and detail level.
The pattern uses a 1 X 1 Filet Grid and a 1 X 2 Filet Grid format, allowing flexibility in pattern scale. The 1 X 1 grid begins with a foundation chain of 135 stitches and works upward for 106 rows, while the 1 X 2 grid starts with a foundation chain of 202 stitches, creating a larger or more detailed interpretation of the same design.
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch – used for foundation chains and turning chains throughout the pattern
- Treble crochet – the primary stitch forming solid blocks in the filet grid
Crafters read the pattern graph from right to left on the first row, then continue following the chart row by row until completion. The turning chain of 3 counts as the first treble crochet of each new row, maintaining consistent stitch height across the work.
Materials
The pattern is compatible with multiple yarn weights, including 4-ply, DK, worsted, Aran, chunky, cobweb, and thread. The choice of yarn weight will significantly affect the finished size of the decoration—lighter weights produce delicate, smaller pieces, while heavier weights create bold, larger displays. Appropriate crochet hooks should be selected to match the chosen yarn weight for proper gauge and drape.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are comfortable reading charts and working with treble crochet stitches. Familiarity with filet crochet techniques is beneficial, though the straightforward stitch combination makes this an excellent project for advancing crochet skills.
Pattern Format
The Ogham Large Love/ Grá Chart is provided as a downloadable PDF, offering immediate access to the pattern for printing or digital reference while working. The chart-based format allows crafters to visualize the complete design before beginning and to track progress as they work through each row.
