Product Description

Orixa is a graceful statement piece designed to add warmth on those chilly spring and summer evenings. Knit it in a bright jewel tone and it’s the perfect complement to jeans and a cute tank; in an elegant neutral it’s alluring with eveningwear. You can wear it as a tubular scarf as well. Choose a luxury yarn like Hazel Knits Divine (Merino/Cashmere/Silk; shown) for beautiful drape.

Scalloped lace edges the cuffs, and mock-cable lace elegantly accents the neckline. Easily-memorized stitch patterns add interest to the knitting process and look deceptively complicated when finished. With seams for added stability. Lace patterns given in charted and written instructions.

Orixa Knit Shrug by Andrea Rangel

What Is Being Made

The Orixa is an advanced knit shrug designed by Andrea Rangel. This garment is a sophisticated bolero-style shrug worked as a rectangle, creating a refined layering piece suitable for intermediate to advanced knitters. The shrug features symmetrical sleeve cuffs with a lace and mock cable body, offering elegant drape and visual interest through strategic stitch patterning.

Construction Technique

The Orixa shrug employs a distinctive rectangular construction method that prioritizes symmetry and precision. The pattern is worked in distinct sections: the first cuff is completed, followed by the lace and mock cable body section. These stitches are left live on the needle and set aside. A second cuff is then cast on and worked to completion. Once finished, the second cuff is grafted to the live stitches of the first piece using the Kitchener stitch, a seamless grafting technique that joins two sets of live stitches invisibly. This method ensures perfectly matched sleeve cuffs and a professional finish.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Orixa features multiple stitch techniques that create visual texture and sophistication:

  • Lace Faggoting Stitch Pattern: The primary stitch pattern used throughout the body of the shrug, worked with the smaller needle. This openwork pattern creates an airy, elegant aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Yarn Overs (yo): Used within the Lace Faggoting Stitch Pattern to create the characteristic eyelets and openwork effects.
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease used in conjunction with yarn overs to balance the lace pattern and maintain stitch count.
  • Knit (K) and Purl (P) stitches: Foundation stitches used throughout the pattern, including edge stitches for selvage definition.
  • Mock Cable: Referenced in the pattern description, this technique adds textural dimension to the body of the shrug without requiring a cable needle.
  • Kitchener Stitch: The grafting technique used to join the two cuff sections seamlessly to the body.

Gauge and Sizing

The Orixa is offered in three sizes: Small (S), Medium (M), and Large (L), with the pattern shown in size S. The model pictured has a 31-inch (79 cm) bust circumference. The shrug is designed to fit bust circumferences of 28–36 inches (and larger for M and L sizes). Gauge is critical for this pattern: 16 stitches and 28 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in the Lace Faggoting Stitch Pattern using the smaller needle. The pattern emphasizes that blocked fabric opens up dramatically, making it essential to block the gauge swatch for accurate measurement. Knitters should work length according to blocked gauge rather than measuring the work in progress, as the lace stitches compress significantly before blocking.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Orixa is designed for 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns, offering flexibility in fiber choice while maintaining the intended drape and stitch definition. The pattern requires two needle sizes: a larger needle for initial cast-on and general work, and a smaller needle specifically for working the Lace Faggoting Stitch Pattern sections. The use of two needle sizes allows the knitter to control fabric density and ensure proper gauge in the delicate lace sections while maintaining appropriate proportions in other areas of the shrug.

Pattern Notes and Finishing

This is an advanced-level pattern requiring proficiency in lace knitting, gauge management, and seamless grafting techniques. The rectangular construction method and emphasis on blocked measurements indicate that precision and attention to detail are essential for successful completion. The downloadable PDF format provides complete instructions, schematics, and stitch charts necessary for executing this elegant bolero shrug.
