Product Description

If you knit for charities or hospitals, this will be a good pattern to keep in your knitting bag. Sized right for small heads. Babies need hats, as most of the heat from their bodies escape the head. Hospitals love donations of these hats! This pattern uses worsted weight yarn, and knitting needles, US# 4. Pattern includes both circular version with double points, or with straight needles.

Preemie Baby Hat by Frugal Knitting Haus

What Is Being Made

These are specially designed knitted hats for premature babies in intensive care units at hospitals. The hats are small, lightweight garments that must meet strict sterilization requirements for medical use. Two pattern variations are provided to accommodate different knitting preferences and needle types.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project suitable for beginners. The patterns demonstrate fundamental knitting techniques including casting on, basic stitch work, and crown decreasing. Both versions use the same foundational approach but differ in construction method—one uses circular needles worked in the round, while the other uses flat needles worked back and forth in rows.

The 4 Needle Version employs circular knitting on double pointed needles, allowing the hat to be constructed seamlessly in continuous rounds. The 2 Needle Version uses traditional flat knitting, requiring seaming or a different finishing approach. Both methods teach essential shaping techniques through strategic decreases that form the crown of the hat.

Stitches Used

  • Ribbing: Knit 1, Purl 1 (K1, P1) creates an elastic edge
  • Stockinette Stitch: Alternating knit and purl rows form a smooth, classic fabric
  • Decreases: Knit 2 together (K2tog) and Purl 2 together (P2tog) to shape the crown

Materials and Yarn Weight

These patterns use worsted weight yarn in 4 ply orlon. The designer specifically recommends using a good quality grade of yarn. Critical material restriction: Do not use wool or nylon yarn, as the finished hats must be sterilized before use in medical settings. Orlon is chosen for its sterilization compatibility and durability through repeated washing and sterilization cycles.

Needles and Tools

The patterns require size 4 needles. For the 4 Needle Version, use size 4 double pointed needles. For the 2 Needle Version, use size 4 straight needles. Both versions use a small amount of yarn, making this an economical project.

Pattern Details

4 Needle Version (Circular): Cast on 54 stitches and divide evenly across 3 needles (18 stitches each). Work K1, P1 ribbing for 5 rounds. Switch to stockinette stitch and knit even for 3 inches measured from the cast-on edge. Crown shaping uses decreases worked every second round, alternating between knit and purl rounds until the hat is complete.

2 Needle Version (Flat): Cast on 54 stitches. Work K1, P1 ribbing for 1 inch. Change to stockinette stitch for 2 inches. Crown shaping begins with strategic decreases: Row 1 uses K16, P2tog repeats across; Row 2 is purled; Row 3 uses K15, K2tog repeats. This graduated decrease pattern continues until the crown is fully shaped.

Difficulty Level

This is a beginner-level knitting project. The pattern teaches fundamental skills including casting on, basic stitches, and simple decreasing without requiring advanced techniques. The small size and quick completion time make it ideal for knitters developing their foundational skills.
