Product Description

It's no secret that I adore old quilts, and you can usually find a few in the cozy corners of our home. Some hand stitched by our families long ago, some I've hunted down at estate sales, and a few I've sewn myself. By far my favorite block designs are simple stars. For this design I wanted to combine these two crafts to make a pieced bonnet, with all the charm of a cozy old quilt, and the warmth and softness of wool!

It's knit up in heavy fingering weight yarn, on size US 3/3.25 & US 2/ 2.75 needles.

The bonnet is worked flat, and pieced all in simple garter and rib.

Sawtooth Quilt Bonnet by Fox and Folk

Project Overview

The Sawtooth Quilt Bonnet is a knitted baby hat designed by Fox and Folk, featuring a distinctive patchwork aesthetic inspired by traditional quilt patterns. This downloadable PDF pattern is suitable for babies and toddlers, with three size options available: 6-12 months, 18-24 months, and 3-4 years.

What Is Being Made

This project creates a fitted bonnet for infants and young children. The bonnet incorporates a sawtooth quilt design element, combining geometric patchwork-style construction with knitted fabric. The design uses a two-color colorwork approach, with a main color (Ash) and a contrasting color (Autumn Leaves) to create visual interest and define the quilt pattern sections.

Yarn and Materials

The Sawtooth Quilt Bonnet is worked using heavy fingering weight or light sport weight yarn, allowing crafters to choose based on their preferred gauge. The yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Main Color (Ash): 95-200 yards (87-182 meters)
  • Contrast Color (Autumn Leaves): 60-100 yards (55-91 meters)

Additional notions include a fine crochet hook, yarn needle, and measuring tape for finishing and assembly.

Needles and Gauge

This pattern requires both double-pointed needles (DPNs) and circular needles in two sizes for proper construction. Crafters will need US 2 (2.75 mm) and US 3 (3.25 mm) needles, including a 24-inch (61 cm) circular needle. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 13 stitches over 2 inches (5 cm) in garter stitch, which is essential for achieving the correct finished size.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Sawtooth Quilt Bonnet employs intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills. The construction begins with a center square patch worked in garter stitch on US 3 needles, establishing the foundation for the quilt-inspired design.

Core stitches and techniques used include:

  • Garter Stitch: The primary stitch texture, created by knitting every row, providing a textured, reversible fabric
  • Cast On (CO): Initial stitches are cast on in the contrast color, with stitch counts varying by size (12, 16, or 20 stitches depending on the size option)
  • Knit (K): Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
  • Knit Two Together (K2TG): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease technique for symmetrical shaping
  • Knit Front and Back (KFB): An increase stitch that creates additional stitches for expanding sections
  • Wrap and Turn (W&T): A short-row technique used to create three-dimensional shaping and curved sections of the bonnet
  • Place Marker (PM) and Remove Marker (RM): Stitch markers help track pattern repeats and construction sections
  • Bind Off (BO): Final edge finishing

The pattern incorporates two-color knitting elements, with the main color and contrast color working together to define the sawtooth quilt patches. The use of short rows via wrap-and-turn techniques allows the designer to create the three-dimensional shaping necessary for a well-fitting bonnet without excessive seaming.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it appropriate for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle shaping techniques, two-color work, and short-row construction. The combination of decreases, increases, and wrap-and-turn shaping requires attention to detail and understanding of how these techniques affect fabric structure.

Pattern Format

The Sawtooth Quilt Bonnet is provided as a downloadable PDF from independent designer Fox and Folk, allowing crafters to access the complete pattern digitally. The pattern includes standard
