Scraps the Floppy Bunny by Phoenixknits
What Is Being Made
Scraps the floppy bunny is a knitted toy designed by Phoenixknits, measuring approximately 16 inches (40.5 cm) long. This is a stuffed animal project ideal for creating a soft, cuddly companion with characteristic floppy proportions. The design is particularly suitable for small children when safety modifications are implemented.
Safety Considerations for Young Children
Scraps is designed with child safety in mind. The pattern notes that when creating this toy for very young children, beaded eyes should be substituted with embroidered alternatives, and decorative buttons should be omitted entirely. As with all handmade toys intended for small children, the pattern emphasizes that limbs and ears must be very securely attached, as these protruding elements can become handles for swinging toys around, creating potential stress points that require reinforcement.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Stockinet stitch (ss): The primary fabric construction method, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to produce the smooth, classic knitted surface
- Knit stitch (k): The foundational knitting stitch used throughout the garment
- Purl stitch (p): Used in alternation with knit stitches to create stockinet fabric
- Knit two together (k2tog) and purl two together (p2tog): Decrease stitches used for shaping the bunny's body, head, and limbs
- Increase one (inc1): Accomplished by knitting into both the front and back of the same stitch, used to expand stitch counts where needed for proper shaping
Materials Required
This knitted toy project requires yarn appropriate for the specified gauge, knitting needles in the size recommended by the pattern, and fibrefill stuffing for filling the completed bunny. Optional embellishments include two larger buttons measuring 5/8 inch (15 mm) and two smaller black beads or buttons measuring approximately 1/4 inch (7 mm) for facial features, though these should be replaced with embroidered eyes for toys intended for very young children.
Pattern Format
Scraps the floppy bunny is provided as a downloadable PDF pattern document containing 16 pages of detailed instructions. The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviation guidance that designers should review before beginning, as notation conventions may vary between pattern designers.
