Product Description

There’s nothing more calming than watching the sea on a still day, with gentle ripples coming into shore. This chunky, soft yarn and simple design combine to make a cosy shawl or scarf, that’s reminiscent of the ebb and flow of gentle waves. (Please note that this was formerly called Moon Kiss.)

Chunky/bulky yarn and larger than usual needles mean the resulting shawl is fluid and not too thick – perfect for summer evenings or for wearing over your coat as a warm scarf, in the winter. Add 3 tassels or a fringe – the choice is yours!

An easy pattern, as skills needed are cast/bind on and off, knit, purl, and yarn forward. Line by line instructions, in English with British/USA terms. Photos help with yarn forward, and making optional tassels or fringe.

Great for the beginner, or an easier TV knit, or if you like knitting and nattering at the same time!

Matching patterns available. Thank you.

Sea Ripples Shawl/Scarf by The Lonely Sea

What Is Being Made

The Sea Ripples Shawl/Scarf is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Heather Corcoran that functions as both a generous shawl and an elegant scarf. This triangular wrap measures approximately 172cm (68 inches) wide across the top with a depth of 51cm (20 inches) from centre top to point, making it a substantial piece suitable for layering or wrapping. The design offers optional finishing options with tassels or fringe, allowing crafters to customize the final appearance of their project.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This shawl employs straightforward knitting techniques appropriate for beginners, utilizing a triangular construction method that builds from the top down or top across. The pattern is worked flat on circular needles using back-and-forth rows rather than working in the round, a common approach for shawl construction that allows for easy stitch counting and shaping. The chunky yarn weight combined with the beginner-friendly difficulty level means the project works up quickly with minimal complex stitch manipulation, making it an accessible introduction to shawl knitting.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern information provided, the Sea Ripples design creates a fluid, rippling texture characteristic of lace or openwork patterns in chunky yarn. The pattern is designed to work well with the substantial yarn weight, ensuring that the resulting fabric maintains appropriate drape and visual interest without becoming overly dense or heavy.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Sea Ripples Shawl requires 3 x 100g balls of King Cole Timeless Chunky in the Colour Chandelier 2914, with each ball containing 155m (164 yards). The actual yardage used for the main shawl is approximately 233g or 362m (383 yards), excluding optional embellishments. If adding tassels, approximately 28g or 44m (46 yards) is needed. The optional fringe requires approximately 110m (120 yards) of yarn, necessitating an additional ball if this finishing option is chosen.

The pattern notes that most chunky or bulky weight yarns should work well with this design, though yardage amounts may vary depending on the specific yarn chosen. Crafters should be aware that alternative yarn selections may affect the fluidity and drape of the finished shawl, and checking tension or gauge is recommended to ensure desired results.

Tools and Equipment

  • Needles: 7mm (UK size 2 / USA size 10.75) circular needle, approximately 100cm (39 inches) or longer, used for working back and forth in rows rather than in the round
  • Additional tools: A large tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing
  • Optional equipment: A large crochet hook, useful for adding tassels or fringe if desired

Finishing Options

The Sea Ripples pattern offers flexibility in finishing touches. Crafters may choose to add tassels, fringe, or leave the edges plain depending on personal preference and desired aesthetic. The inclusion of optional fringe is shown in a photograph on page 5 of the pattern, providing visual reference for those considering this embellishment option.
