Product Description
The Snowy Day Cowl is thick, cozy and perfect for blustery winter days. When the wind howls, this cowl can be pulled up like a hood to fashionably protect you from the elements.
Slipped stitches create a fabric that looks great on both sides! The outside highlights the thicker yarn in horizontal stripes and the inside of the cowl highlights the thinner yarn in vertical stripes. The four-row repeat is easily memorized after just a few repeats!

Project Overview
The Snowy Day Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed by Emily Platzer. This cowl is knit flat using circular knitting needles, which provide adequate needle capacity for managing the stitch count throughout the project. The pattern employs a provisional cast-on technique at the beginning, with stitches later joined seamlessly using the Kitchener stitch method to create a finished, tubular cowl without visible seams.
Construction Method
This design utilizes a flat knitting approach rather than working in the round from the start. Circular knitting needles are essential for this pattern, as they accommodate the full stitch count comfortably. The provisional cast-on creates live stitches at the cast-on edge that remain available for later work. Once the main body of the cowl is completed, the live stitches from the beginning and end are grafted together using the Kitchener stitch, a seamless joining technique that creates an invisible seam by interlocking stitches from two needles.
Stitch Techniques
- Slipped stitches: A primary design element that creates interesting visual patterns visible on both sides of the finished cowl
- Kitchener stitch: Used to graft together the live stitches from the provisional cast-on and the final row, creating a seamless join
- Provisional cast-on: An invisible cast-on method that leaves live stitches available for grafting
Materials Required
This pattern is worked in super chunky yarn weight, which creates a quick-knitting, substantial fabric ideal for a cozy cowl. Circular knitting needles are required to accommodate all stitches comfortably while working flat.
Finished Design
The slipped stitch pattern creates visual interest on both the front and back of the cowl, making it an attractive accessory from any angle. The seamless Kitchener stitch join ensures a polished, professional finish without visible seaming.
